Job Overview: The Data AnalyticsIntern position is designed for individuals who are eager to gain practical experience in data management and analysis within the context of the United Nations' Security Sector Reform Unit (SSRU). The intern will play a crucial role in supporting the SSRU's mission by assisting in the mapping and analysis of data management practices, drafting guidelines for data collection, and engaging with various stakeholders in the UN system. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of research, knowledge, and advocacy efforts related to security sector reform and governance. The intern will work closely with experienced professionals, gaining insights into the workings of the UN and enhancing their skills in data visualization, workflow automation, and analytical reporting. The internship can be undertaken either remotely or in a hybrid arrangement at the UN premises in New York, providing flexibility in work location.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: assisting in the mapping and analysis of SSRU data management practices; drafting guidelines for data collection and management related to field missions; supporting engagement with the UN SSR Community of Practice and Interagency SSR Taskforce; creating dashboards to visualize SSR activities and thematic data; developing presentations on data-related aspects; identifying and documenting automated workflows; developing surveys and prototype tools; conducting analysis for reports and policy briefs; creating data flows and pipelines; assisting with data aggregation and interactive analytic reports; and performing other duties as requested by the supervisor. This comprehensive set of responsibilities will provide the intern with a well-rounded experience in data analytics within the UN context.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is essential. Applicants should demonstrate proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams, as well as possess the ability to draft news articles and social media posts, and design surveys and polls.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes being a student in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or being enrolled in or having completed a Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. The UN encourages applicants from diverse academic backgrounds, particularly those with studies in computer science, analytics, statistics, information management, business analysis, or related fields, as these areas are beneficial for the role.
Experience: While prior professional work experience is not a prerequisite for this internship, applicants should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid and can be either full-time (35 hours per week) or part-time (20 hours per week), with an expected duration of six months.
