Job Overview:
The Driver position within the OHCHR Mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of authorized personnel. The incumbent will be responsible for driving vehicles, making deliveries, and handling minor purchases as needed. This role requires a strong understanding of driving regulations and a commitment to maintaining a safe driving record. The Driver will also be expected to perform routine maintenance on vehicles, ensuring they are in good working condition. The position demands professionalism, effective communication skills, and a client-oriented approach, as the Driver will interact with various officials and visitors. The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting the mission's operations by facilitating transportation and logistics, thereby contributing to the overall effectiveness of the OHCHR's work in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Driver will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Safely drive vehicles for the transport of authorized personnel.
  • Make regular deliveries of parcels, documents, and other items between the UN office and various institutions, including Ministries, Embassies, and Permanent Missions.
  • Handle minor purchases and collect urgent items from local suppliers as requested.
  • Collect goods from customs, adhering to all relevant regulations and formalities.
  • Meet official personnel at the airport and assist with immigration and customs procedures as required.
  • Interact effectively and tactfully with officials and visitors.
  • Maintain the assigned vehicles, checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, and performing minor repairs as necessary.
  • Log official trips, daily mileage, gas consumption, and maintenance activities.
  • Follow established procedures in the event of an accident involving the vehicle.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a valid driver's license and have completed driver training. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of driving rules and regulations, as well as knowledge of the local area and road conditions. The ability to communicate effectively and maintain a professional demeanor is essential. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to safety and efficiency in their work, as well as the ability to handle stressful situations calmly and effectively.

Educational Background:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. Candidates with a first-level university degree may have their minimum experience requirement waived, allowing them to apply with zero years of relevant experience. This educational background ensures that candidates have the foundational knowledge necessary for the role.

Experience:
A minimum of two years of experience as a driver providing driving services with a safe driving record is required. Candidates with a first-level university degree may apply with no prior experience. Experience driving various types of vehicles, including vans and other motorized vehicles, is essential. Previous experience working as a professional driver for an international organization, such as the United Nations or an international NGO, is highly desirable and will be considered an asset.

Languages:
English is the required working language for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Candidates should demonstrate effective communication skills in English to fulfill the requirements of the role.

Additional Notes:
This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that applicants must be authorized to work in Bangladesh. The appointment may be extended based on the availability of funds and the extension of the mandate. Candidates selected from outside the duty station will be responsible for their relocation expenses. Staff members recruited locally are not eligible for allowances or benefits exclusive to international recruitment.
