  • Its mission is to deepen the Fund’s engagement with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and the broader Middle East, North Africa, and Pakistan (MENAP) region. The office plays a crucial role in regional surveillance and capacity development, facilitating discussions among policymakers and stakeholders. ROR is involved in significant events such as the Al-Ula Conference for Emerging Markets Economies (AUCEME) and supports various academic conferences and regional surveillance notes, contributing to the IMF's overall mission of promoting global economic stability and growth.

Job Overview:
The Resident Scholar position at the IMF Regional Office in Riyadh is designed to support the analytical agenda of the Middle East and Central Asia Department (MCD). The role involves producing high-quality analytical work, including drafting research papers, presentations for conferences, and summaries of conference proceedings. The Resident Scholar will collaborate with MCD policy groups and other IMF departments, aiming to develop a network of economists and economic associations in the region. This position is pivotal in enhancing the IMF’s policy engagement in the GCC and MENAP regions, contributing to the organization of key conferences and policy forums, and fostering dialogue on economic issues.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Resident Scholar will conduct research on macroeconomic, fiscal, monetary, or structural issues as directed by the Regional Studies Division (RSD) and in collaboration with MCD policy groups. Responsibilities include participating in coordination meetings to ensure alignment with the HQ work program, identifying and mobilizing academic speakers for high-level events, contributing analytical notes and policy briefs for regional events, and participating as a lecturer or panelist in policy forums. Additionally, the Resident Scholar will help establish relationships with academic institutions and economic associations, mentor ROR economists, and contribute to internal knowledge-sharing initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Economics, Finance, or a related field, along with at least 10 years of relevant experience in policy research, academia, or international organizations. A demonstrated expertise in macroeconomic analysis, econometrics, or finance is essential, as well as a strong record of publications in peer-reviewed journals. Excellent communication and drafting skills in English are required, while proficiency in Arabic is considered an asset but not mandatory. Familiarity with IMF operations and MENAP economies is also advantageous but not required.

Educational Background:
The position requires a Ph.D. in Economics, Finance, or a closely related field. This advanced degree is essential for conducting the high-level research and analysis expected from the Resident Scholar, ensuring that the individual has a strong theoretical foundation and practical understanding of economic principles and policies.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in policy research, academia, or international organizations. This extensive experience is crucial for understanding the complexities of macroeconomic issues and for contributing effectively to the IMF's analytical agenda and regional engagement efforts.

Languages:
Strong communication skills in English are mandatory for this position, as the Resident Scholar will be required to draft reports, papers, and presentations. While proficiency in Arabic is not required, it is considered an asset that could enhance the candidate's ability to engage with regional stakeholders and contribute to discussions in the local context.

Additional Notes:
This is a locally recruited position with a contract duration of 6 months, which is renewable once. The position is expected to start as soon as possible. Compensation will be based on the United Nations salary scale for the duty station in Riyadh.
