Job Overview: The Protection Manager role at DRC is pivotal for overseeing and enhancing the protection activities in the North Ethiopia Region, particularly in the Shire Field Office. This position entails the design, implementation, and technical oversight of various protection initiatives, including protection monitoring, case management, and support for Gender-Based Violence (GBV) survivors. The Protection Manager will also be responsible for providing technical support and capacity building to local partners, ensuring that protection strategies are effectively integrated into all relevant programming. The role requires a strong focus on collaboration with various stakeholders, including local partners, UN agencies, and other NGOs, to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive response to the protection needs of displacement-affected communities. The Protection Manager will also play a crucial role in developing advocacy strategies and ensuring compliance with donor and internal procedures, thereby contributing to the overall mission of DRC in promoting the rights and well-being of vulnerable populations.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Protection Manager will lead the implementation of DRC protection activities, which include protection monitoring, case management, Gender-Based Violence support, psychosocial-support" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">psychosocial support, legal aid, and community-based protection initiatives. Responsibilities include coordinating the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of protection projects, contributing to concept note and proposal development, and conducting protection needs assessments. The Protection Manager will ensure that ethical data collection and protection-related information management systems are in place, and will technically lead protection assessments to inform program design. Additionally, the role involves providing technical oversight to field teams, delivering training sessions, and ensuring the integration of protection principles across other sectors. The Protection Manager will also manage protection grants, oversee budget expenditures, and prepare timely reports in collaboration with the MEAL team. People management is another critical aspect of the role, which includes recruitment, onboarding, and professional development of protection staff.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess at least 5 years of work experience in protection or related fields, with a minimum of 3 years in international organizations and humanitarian settings. A university degree in social sciences, such as social work, psychology, or law, is preferred. Knowledge and experience in designing, implementing, and monitoring protection interventions across various components of DRC’s Protection sector are essential. Proven experience in capacity development, including the preparation and delivery of training materials, is also required. The ideal candidate should demonstrate strong leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
Educational Background: A university degree in social sciences, such as social work, psychology, law, or a related field is required. Additional certifications or training in protection-related areas, such as Gender-Based Violence, Protection Information Management, or Mental Health and Psychosocial Support, would be advantageous. Candidates should have a solid understanding of international protection standards and humanitarian law.
Experience: The position requires at least 5 years of relevant work experience in protection or related fields, with a strong emphasis on experience within international organizations and humanitarian contexts. Candidates should have a proven track record of managing protection programs and leading teams in challenging environments. Experience in capacity building and mentoring staff is also essential, as well as familiarity with donor regulations and compliance requirements.
Languages: Fluency in English (spoken and written) is mandatory, with excellent communication skills. Proficiency in Tigrigna and/or Afar (spoken) is desirable, as is knowledge of Amharic (spoken). The ability to communicate effectively in these languages will enhance the candidate's ability to engage with local communities and stakeholders.
