Job Overview: The position of Mechanical Engineer, Divertor, is a critical role within the Fusion Technology and I&C Division (FTIC) of the Engineering Services Department (ESD) at the ITER Organization. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the entire engineering life cycle of the Divertor, which is a key component in the ITER project. This includes specification, design, qualification, procurement, installation, integration, commissioning, and maintenance of the Divertor systems. The role requires a systematic approach to ensure that all deliverables are produced on schedule and within budget while adhering to quality assurance standards. The Mechanical Engineer will work closely with the discipline manager to develop their skills and contribute to the overall success of the ITER project. Duties and Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of the Mechanical Engineer, Divertor, include contributing to the procurement arrangements for the Divertor scope of activity, conducting stress analysis of Divertor components using Finite Element Method (FEM), and preparing technical reports. The engineer will be responsible for writing technical documentation necessary for procurement, fabrication, qualification, and testing of equipment, as well as preparing relevant tenders and updating documents as needed. Additionally, the engineer will follow up on manufacturing processes, including qualification tests and final acceptance tests (FATs). The role also involves collecting and verifying input data for design, reviewing deliverables produced by external design contractors, and providing assistance to domestic agencies and contractors in carrying out engineering, R&D, interface control, and procurement work. The engineer will review detailed workshop drawings, installation procedures, and inspection and test plans, issuing inspection and observation reports as required. The position may also involve addressing structural and mechanical discipline-related problems and following up on field engineering changes and installation non-conformances.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Mechanical Engineer, Divertor position must possess proven experience in mechanical engineering, particularly in components designed for Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) environments. Proficiency in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is essential for performing thermal and structural analyses on complex systems. The ideal candidate should have experience in assessing components according to design criteria and refining designs based on analysis outcomes. Additionally, candidates should have experience in specifying, designing, testing, installing, and maintaining mechanical components and systems, as well as preparing technical documentation such as design descriptions and test procedures. Familiarity with manufacturing processes and mechanical manufacturing techniques is also required, along with an understanding of CAD 3D models and 2D technical drawings. Continuous improvement and quality management systems knowledge are important for enhancing efficiency and productivity.
Educational Background: A Master’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a relevant discipline is required for this position. Candidates with extensive professional experience that involves similar work responsibilities may be considered in lieu of the required educational qualifications. Additional training certificates in relevant domains may also be taken into account.
Experience: The position requires a significant level of experience in mechanical engineering, particularly in the context of fusion technology and related systems. Candidates should have a strong background in mechanical engineering principles and practices, with specific experience in the design and analysis of components used in high-stakes environments such as nuclear fusion. Experience in project management and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams is also beneficial, as the role involves working closely with various stakeholders to achieve project objectives.
Languages: Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly if it facilitates communication within the diverse international team at the ITER Organization.
Additional Notes: The initial employment contract for this position is up to five years, with the possibility for extension based on project needs and individual performance. The job grade for this position begins at P1, and the final grade offered to the selected candidate will be determined by the ITER Organization's Director General.
