European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) About
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – the fundamental particles.
Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research organization established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. Founded in 1954, CERN employs thousands of physicists and engineers who work collaboratively to explore the basic constituents of matter. The organization operates in multiple countries and is known for its world-class facilities, including the Large Hadron Collider, which is the largest and most complex scientific instrument ever built. CERN's mission is to advance knowledge and understanding of the universe through cutting-edge research and innovation.

Job Overview:
The Mechanical engineer" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Technical Engineer position at CERN involves joining a multidisciplinary project team focused on the design, fabrication, and testing of components for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The role requires overseeing the design of cryogenic distribution lines, utilizing computer-aided design (CAD) tools, and conducting structural and thermomechanical studies. The engineer will be responsible for ensuring that designs meet functional specifications and adhere to safety and reliability standards. This position is integral to the success of the HL-LHC project, which aims to enhance the capabilities of the Large Hadron Collider and contribute to groundbreaking discoveries in particle physics.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Mechanical Technical Engineer will manage design office tasks, collaborating closely with mechanical engineers, designers, and draftsmen. Key responsibilities include analyzing design requirements, executing design studies for mechanical assemblies and components, and creating detailed 3D models and technical drawings. The engineer will prepare project documentation in accordance with quality assurance procedures and will follow up on the manufacturing, assembly, and installation of mechanical components. Additionally, the role involves preparing presentations, technical reports, engineering specifications, and calculation notes to communicate project progress and findings effectively.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Proven experience in a mechanical design office is essential, including skills in mechanical dimensioning and the use of standard mechanical analysis tools. Familiarity with computer-aided design software, particularly CATIA, is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of design and construction principles, mechanical structures, and production of technical drawings compliant with ISO Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS).

Educational Background:
A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field is required for this position. Candidates with equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. The educational background should include a solid foundation in mechanical design principles, materials science, and engineering analysis.

Experience:
The position requires proven experience as a designer in a mechanical design office, with a focus on mechanical dimensioning and the application of both analytical and numerical analysis tools. Candidates should have a track record of producing technical drawings and working with CAD software, ideally with experience in ISO GPS standards for drawing dimensioning and tolerancing. Experience in the assembly of mechanical structures and knowledge of manufacturing methods is also important.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.

Additional Notes:
This position is a limited duration contract, with two positions available for 5 years and 3 years, respectively. Holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The role requires a commitment to a 40-hour work week, with full onsite presence. Flexibility is essential, as the position may involve work in radiation areas, night shifts, and work during weekends and official holidays as needed by the organization. The job grade for this position is 4-5, and it falls under the field of Mechanical Engineering.
