Job Overview:
The UN Clinic Laboratory Technician will operate under the direct supervision of the UN clinic health manager. This role is crucial as the UN clinic provides health services to approximately 5,000 UN agency staff and their dependents in South Sudan. The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for managing the laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with international standards, and maintaining the laboratory equipment. The position requires a commitment to providing equal duty of care to UN Volunteers, which includes comprehensive support during their assignment, such as orientation, administrative assistance, structured guidance, and access to necessary resources. The Laboratory Technician will play a vital role in health promotion and monitoring programs, performing diagnostic tests, and ensuring the confidentiality and timely reporting of results to the Medical Doctor. The incumbent will also be involved in the organization of voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) services, ensuring that patient results are handled with the utmost confidentiality and professionalism.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Laboratory Technician will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including: managing the UN dispensary laboratory to ensure smooth daily operations; maintaining laboratory equipment according to manufacturer specifications; resolving laboratory performance issues efficiently; ensuring safe handling of bio-hazardous materials in compliance with international standards; drawing blood samples and collecting various biological samples for testing; performing laboratory tests as requested by the Medical Doctor; sterilizing instruments and containers according to bio-safety standards; assisting in health promotion and monitoring programs; reporting test results promptly and confidentially; organizing VCT services in collaboration with the national HIV advisor; ensuring proper disposal of hazardous materials; managing reagent stocks and laboratory supplies; arranging for outside laboratory tests when necessary; and keeping detailed records of laboratory activities and providing statistical reports.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate a high level of professionalism and competence in laboratory testing and modern laboratory technology. They should possess effective organizational skills, the ability to prioritize tasks, and a commitment to gender equality in the workplace. Strong interpersonal skills are essential for establishing effective working relationships in a diverse environment. The candidate should also show initiative in continuous learning and be proficient in using relevant laboratory equipment. Effective communication skills, both written and oral, are necessary for reporting to clients and maintaining transparency in decision-making processes.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background in laboratory technology or a related field is required for this position. Candidates should have formal training in laboratory practices, bio-safety standards, and health promotion methodologies. Certifications or degrees in medical laboratory science or a similar discipline will be highly regarded.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have prior experience in laboratory settings, particularly in managing laboratory operations and performing diagnostic tests. Experience in a UN or international organization is advantageous, as is familiarity with the specific health challenges faced in South Sudan. The ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing environments is crucial for success in this role.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the working language of the UN. Knowledge of local languages spoken in South Sudan would be considered an asset, enhancing communication with local staff and patients.

Additional Notes:
This is a national assignment, and the volunteer will be responsible for their accommodation. The position may involve working in challenging conditions, and candidates should be prepared for the realities of living and working in South Sudan. The role is full-time, and the volunteer will receive support from the host entity, including access to office space, equipment, and necessary training.
