Job Overview:
The position of Editor/Proofreader at the IMF involves working under the general supervision of the Chief and/or alternate of the French Section within the Language Services of the Corporate Services and Facilities Department (CSF). The candidate will be responsible for editing, proofreading, and typesetting translated IMF publications and documents, as well as reviewing IMF digital content in French. The role requires the candidate to use their judgment to correct errors and make necessary style and syntax changes, consulting with translators and revisers to resolve complex linguistic issues. Additionally, the candidate will help plan, coordinate, and supervise the editorial production workflow for both print and digital publications, ensuring high-quality outputs that meet the IMF's standards. The position also involves assigning tasks to freelancers, providing feedback, and maintaining a roster of freelance editors, proofreaders, and typesetters. The candidate will compile style and format standards for the section and contribute to maintaining optimal translation memories, while also coordinating with other Language Services sections on multilingual publications. The use of CAT tools for translating repetitive text is also a key function of this role.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities for the Editor/Proofreader position include:
  • Editing, proofreading, and typesetting translated IMF publications and documents.
  • Reviewing IMF digital content in French for accuracy and quality.
  • Correcting errors and making style and syntax changes as necessary.
  • Consulting with translators and revisers to resolve complex linguistic issues.
  • Planning, coordinating, and supervising the editorial production workflow for print and digital publications.
  • Assigning editing, proofreading, and typesetting tasks to freelancers and providing constructive feedback.
  • Submitting ongoing performance assessments to the Section Chief and/or alternate.
  • Participating in maintaining a roster of freelance editors, proofreaders, and typesetters.
  • Compiling style and format standards for the section. 1
  • Contributing to the maintenance of optimal translation memories. 1
  • Coordinating with other Language Services sections on multilingual publications. 1
  • Translating repetitive text using CAT tools. 1
  • Keeping abreast of available technology in the translation industry and showing willingness to learn new technology.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree or equivalent in linguistics, economics, communication, journalism, professional editing, or a related field. Alternatively, a university degree supplemented by a minimum of six years of relevant professional experience is acceptable. The candidate must have native proficiency in French and an excellent knowledge of English. Considerable professional experience in editing and proofreading translated French documents and publications of a complex nature for governments, financial institutions, or international financial institutions is required. Additionally, candidates should have excellent knowledge of publication production techniques and practices used in the publishing industry, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, OneDrive), Adobe Acrobat, and general knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in linguistics, economics, communication, journalism, professional editing, or a related field. Candidates with degrees from French-speaking programs, particularly those with translation, editorial, and/or journalism degrees, are encouraged to apply. A university degree supplemented by significant professional experience is also acceptable.

Experience:
The position requires considerable professional experience, specifically in editing and proofreading translated French documents and publications that are complex in nature. Candidates should have a minimum of six years of relevant professional experience, ideally within governmental, financial, or international financial institution contexts. Experience in managing editorial workflows and working with freelancers is also beneficial.

Languages:
Native proficiency in French is mandatory, along with an excellent command of English. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not explicitly required for this position.
