Job Overview: The Electronics Technician position within CERN's Electronics Service (EPR) team is focused on the layout, industrialization, and production of electronics modules for CERN's accelerator complex. This role involves hands-on experience with state-of-the-art industrial equipment and quality standards, specifically in the assembly and testing of printed circuit boards (PCBs). The technician will be responsible for performing PCB assembly and soldering of Surface Mount Devices (SMD) and connectors, operating and maintaining industrial assembly equipment, and interpreting assembly documentation. The position requires a strong motivation to learn and contribute to high-quality PCB production, as well as the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment. Attention to detail and good communication skills are essential, as the technician will participate in quality inspections and ensure compliance with CERN's acceptance criteria.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Electronics Technician include:
Performing PCB assembly and soldering of Surface Mount Devices (SMD) and connectors.
Operating and maintaining industrial assembly equipment under supervision.
Interpreting and applying assembly documentation such as bills of materials, pick-and-place files, and assembly drawings.
Participating in quality inspections to ensure compliance with CERN's acceptance criteria.
Contributing to the preparation and assembly of prototypes and detector modules.
Supporting component procurement and stock management.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have a background in electronics and a willingness to develop practical assembly and manufacturing skills. A strong motivation to learn and contribute to high-quality PCB production is essential. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is required, along with attention to detail and a methodical approach to work. Good communication skills and adaptability in a laboratory setting are also necessary. Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Electronics, Electrical, Mechatronics technology, or a related field. Applicants with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree are not eligible for this position.
Educational Background: The minimum educational requirement for this position is a general secondary education diploma. Candidates should have graduated in a relevant field such as Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or Mechatronics technology. The position is designed for individuals who have recently completed their education and are looking to gain practical experience in the field of electronics.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in a relevant field. This experience should be in areas related to electronics, electrical engineering, or mechatronics technology. Candidates who have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract are not eligible to apply.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication within the diverse environment at CERN.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with a possible extension of up to 36 months maximum. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job is fully onsite. The target start date for the position is June 1, 202

The position offers a monthly stipend of 4624 Swiss Francs (net of tax), coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme for the employee and their family, and membership in the CERN Pension Fund. Additional benefits may include an installation grant, family allowances, and payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of the contract. Employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave per year, along with on-the-job and formal training opportunities at CERN, including in-house language courses for English and/or French.
