Job Overview: The consultant will play a pivotal role in exploring Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to enhance climate resilience and social cohesion in the context of transhumance in West and Central Africa. This position is part of the Climate Change, Migration and Data (CCMD) programme, which is implemented in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. The consultant will work remotely, coordinating with stakeholders across the region to deliver a comprehensive research project that addresses the intersection of climate change, migration, and pastoral mobility. The consultant is expected to produce a series of deliverables, including an inception report, analytical reports, policy briefs, and a presentation of findings, all aimed at informing policy and practice in the region.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for delivering a series of outputs as part of a three-instalment payment structure. The first deliverable, due 20 days after signing the contract, includes the development of a research project with clearly defined objectives and research questions, along with an inception report that outlines the methodology, key informants, bibliography, and a detailed work plan. The second deliverable, due 75 days after signing the contract, involves producing an analytical report on Nature-based Solutions and pastoral mobility, along with policy briefs that provide strategic recommendations and guidance notes for practitioners. The final deliverable, due 90 days after signing the contract, requires the consultant to present the findings to stakeholders, ensuring that the results are effectively communicated and disseminated.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate should possess expertise in climate mobility, pastoralism, and Nature-based Solutions, with a strong background in research and policy analysis specifically within the context of West and Central Africa. The consultant should demonstrate a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities related to climate change and migration, as well as the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders in the region. Strong analytical skills and the capacity to produce high-quality written outputs are essential for this role.
Educational Background: Candidates should have a relevant educational background, preferably at the postgraduate level, in fields such as environmental science, social sciences, migration studies, or related disciplines. A strong academic foundation in climate change, migration, and policy analysis is highly desirable, as it will support the consultant's ability to conduct thorough research and provide informed recommendations.
Experience: The consultant should have substantial experience in conducting research and policy analysis related to climate change and migration, particularly in the context of West and Central Africa. A proven track record of delivering high-quality reports and engaging with stakeholders in the region is essential. Experience working with international organizations or NGOs focused on migration, climate change, or environmental issues will be an advantage.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory, while knowledge of French and Spanish is considered an asset. The selection process will specifically evaluate language proficiency, which may include written and/or oral assessments to ensure effective communication with stakeholders across the region.
Additional Notes: This consultancy position is subject to funding confirmation and will require the candidate to be medically fit for appointment. The consultant will be responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accidents or illnesses. IOM provides coverage against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan for the duration of the consultancy.
