Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The Legal Affairs and External Relations Bureau (LEB) is a part of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which is dedicated to strengthening the international legal framework for civil aviation. The organization focuses on addressing current and emerging challenges in civil aviation through the Chicago Convention and its Annexes, as well as other air law instruments. LEB provides legal advice and assistance to ICAO Member States and supports various working groups and committees in the field of international law. The bureau is responsible for maintaining relations with Member States and the Host Government, and it develops a comprehensive communications program to manage media-related activities. ICAO operates globally, with a mission to promote safe, secure, and sustainable development of civil aviation worldwide.

Job Overview:
The intern position within the Legal Affairs and External Relations Bureau (LEB) is designed for individuals who are pursuing or have completed a graduate degree in international law or a related field. The intern will work under the general guidance of the director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Deputy Director and the supervision of a designated legal officer. The primary functions of this role include conducting legal research on various international law issues, assisting legal officers in reviewing legal documents and agreements, preparing drafts of reports and background papers, and servicing the Assembly and other committees. The intern will also be involved in preparing replies to correspondence from states and international organizations. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in the field of international law and to contribute to the work of ICAO.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for conducting legal research on a diverse range of assigned issues in international law and international relations. This includes selecting relevant materials, analyzing information, and presenting findings for internal review. The intern will assist legal officers in reviewing legal documents, instruments, agreements, and contracts, identifying important issues and inconsistencies. Additionally, the intern will help prepare drafts of background papers, studies, reports, and other legal documents. The intern will also assist in servicing the Assembly, committees, and working groups, including preparing summaries of issues and views of delegations. Other related duties may be assigned as necessary.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have completed or be enrolled in a graduate degree program (second-level university degree or higher) in a field related to international law. For applicants from countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree is required. Candidates should possess strong analytical skills and the ability to conduct thorough legal research.

Educational Background:
Candidates are required to have completed or be enrolled in a graduate degree program in international law or a related field. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of international law and the legal frameworks that govern civil aviation.

Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandated, candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of international law principles and the ability to conduct legal research. Any relevant internships or academic projects related to international law will be considered advantageous.

Languages:
Fluent reading, writing, and speaking abilities in English are essential for this position. Additionally, a working knowledge of any other language of the Organization, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish, is desirable and will enhance the candidate's profile.

Additional Notes:
This internship is unpaid, and all costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by the intern. The duration of the internship is between three to six months, with the expectation of working five days a week on a full-time basis. Interns are not eligible for any other form of employment within ICAO during the internship and cannot apply for or be appointed to any post in the Secretariat or be contracted for any other remunerated employment with ICAO for six months following the end of their internship. A work permit is required to work in Canada as an intern.
