Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, was established by the UN General Assembly to promote sustainable and resilient urban environments. The organization focuses on urbanization and human settlement issues globally, aiming to create well-planned and governed cities with adequate housing and access to essential services. UN-Habitat operates in various countries, including Ukraine, where it supports recovery efforts in the wake of crises, linking immediate reconstruction needs with long-term resilience strategies. The organization emphasizes the importance of urban planning and design, working closely with local governments and institutions to enhance their capacities and develop national policies for recovery.

Job Overview:
The Localization & Documentation Volunteers will play a crucial role in the Tech Volunteers for Resilience (Tech4R) programme, which aims to mobilize skilled digital volunteers to create open-source tools that support disaster resilience and sustainable development. Specifically, the volunteers will assist in the implementation of a GIS-Based Recovery Dashboard for Borodianka hromada in Kyiv Oblast. This dashboard is designed to visualize reconstruction efforts and environmental risks, thereby facilitating data-driven recovery planning. The volunteers will be responsible for ensuring that the dashboard is accessible to both Ukrainian and English-speaking users through effective translation and documentation efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Localization & Documentation Volunteers will undertake a variety of tasks, including: translating dashboard interface elements, labels, and content from English to Ukrainian and vice versa, ensuring that translations are accurate and contextually relevant; adapting visual and textual content to maintain cultural and linguistic consistency; creating bilingual user guides, FAQs, and technical documentation for municipal staff; collaborating with the Visualization and Dashboard Development teams to ensure language alignment; reviewing translations for consistency with UN-Habitat communication standards; preparing clear documentation of system setup, data workflows, and update procedures; and supporting final proofreading and formatting before the dashboard is delivered.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires volunteers to possess strong language skills in both English and Ukrainian, with a focus on translation accuracy and cultural relevance. Volunteers should demonstrate adaptability and flexibility, as well as creativity in their approach to problem-solving. Professionalism and self-management are essential, along with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams. Familiarity with UN-Habitat's communication standards and terminology is advantageous, as is experience in translation or documentation roles.

Educational Background:
While specific educational qualifications are not explicitly stated, a background in languages, communications, urban planning, or a related field would be beneficial. Volunteers should have a strong command of both English and Ukrainian, with an emphasis on written communication skills.

Experience:
The position is open to individuals with varying levels of experience, but prior experience in translation, documentation, or related fields is preferred. Volunteers should be comfortable working in a collaborative environment and possess the ability to manage their time effectively to meet project deadlines.

Languages:
Mandatory languages for this position include Ukrainian and English, with a strong emphasis on translation skills between the two languages. Additional languages may be considered an asset but are not required.

Additional Notes:
This is a volunteer assignment, not an employment position. Volunteers will not receive monetary compensation but will benefit from private insurance coverage during their assignment, including health, dental, life, and dismemberment insurance provided by CIGNA. Other benefits include opportunities for international collaboration and mentorship, skills development in real-world UN-driven projects, and a Certificate of Service upon completion of the assignment. The role is part of the Tech4R programme, which focuses on mobilizing digital volunteers to create open-source solutions for disaster resilience.
