Job Overview: The Researcher in the Crisis, Conflict, and Arms division at Human Rights Watch will focus on urgent human rights issues within the United States. This role involves conducting comprehensive human rights research, advocacy, and media work on critical topics such as the new global 'war on drugs' initiated by the Trump administration, domestic military deployments, excessive use of force by law enforcement during protests and immigration raids, and the implications of the administration's dismantlement of oversight mechanisms for military and civilian harm mitigation. The ideal candidate will possess a robust understanding of the US national security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security framework and domestic laws regarding the use of force, alongside a deep network of contacts in the field of US national security. The position requires a strong grasp of international humanitarian law and human rights law, as well as substantial knowledge of the racial history of the US and its impact on policing and immigration enforcement. The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced environment, collaborating with colleagues and partners from diverse backgrounds, and will report directly to the Director of the Crisis, Conflict, and Arms Division.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Researcher will be responsible for a variety of tasks including: conducting research, monitoring, and fact-finding missions; documenting human rights abuses through the collection and analysis of information from diverse sources; writing and publicizing reports based on research findings; advising on strategy development and implementation in partnership with the Director; managing communications and maintaining relationships with stakeholders; liaising with HRW teams to ensure effective coordination of activities; presenting human rights issues to stakeholders; assisting in the development of strategies to change abusive laws and practices; responding to media inquiries; identifying key political and human rights trends; assisting with fundraising efforts; collaborating with NGOs and local human rights organizations; delivering outputs in a timely manner; and performing any other duties as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a graduate or law degree or equivalent work experience. A minimum of five years of relevant experience in human rights research or a related field is required. The role demands strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within HRW and with external partners, as well as a commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive team culture. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are mandatory, along with the ability to conduct research interviews in Spanish. A deep understanding of international human rights and humanitarian law, expertise in US national security systems, and substantial knowledge of the racial history of the US are essential. Proven experience in dynamic situations, including conducting interviews with various stakeholders, is required, along with the ability to distill information effectively and manage stress in a fast-paced environment.
Educational Background: A graduate or law degree is required for this position, or equivalent work experience in a relevant field. This educational background is essential to ensure the candidate has the necessary knowledge and skills to engage with complex human rights issues and legal frameworks.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience in human rights research or a related field. This experience should include a proven track record of working in dynamic situations and conducting interviews with victims, witnesses, and officials, demonstrating the ability to navigate sensitive topics and environments effectively.

Additional Notes: This is a fixed-term, full-time position with a one-year contract. The successful candidate may have the option to work remotely. The salary range for this position is USD 80,000 – 88,00
