Job Overview: The Accompanier will play a crucial role in working closely with a cluster of selected Civil Society Groups (CSGs) in Makueni County, focusing on capacity building, mentorship, and the implementation of VSO's Volunteering for Development (VfD) approach. This position is designed to enhance the technical, organizational, and leadership capacities of the CSGs, with a strong emphasis on fostering gender and disability inclusion. The Accompanier will support the adoption of accountability and participatory practices, amplify the collective voice of the people for policy influence, and ensure government accountability. The role involves building trust and co-facilitating holistic participatory capacity strengthening processes through methods such as accompaniment, mentoring, coaching, peer learning, and field exposure. The Accompanier will also encourage collaboration among CSGs, enabling them to become self-reliant and sustainable. Working alongside other VSO volunteers, project staff, and local partners, the Accompanier will help shift power dynamics, allowing CSGs to take the lead while volunteers facilitate and empower through equitable partnerships and mutual respect.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Engage with Civil Society Groups (CSGs) to build their capacity and strengthen their organizational structures.
Provide mentorship and coaching to CSGs, focusing on leadership development and technical skills.
Facilitate participatory processes that encourage community involvement and ownership of initiatives.
Support the implementation of inclusive governance and social accountability practices within CSGs.
Foster gender and disability inclusion in all activities and initiatives.
Amplify the collective voice of CSGs to influence policy and hold government accountable.
Collaborate with other VSO volunteers and local partners to ensure a cohesive approach to community development.
Conduct field visits to assess the progress of CSGs and provide feedback for improvement.
Document and share best practices and lessons learned from the capacity-building processes. 1
Promote a culture of mutual respect and equitable partnerships among all stakeholders involved.
Required Qualifications:
Proven experience in engaging with civil society groups, particularly grassroots organizations, youth, women, and disability associations.
Understanding of civil society strengthening, locally led development, and rights-based approaches.
Proficiency in using participatory tools and methodologies for community engagement.
Strong facilitation, mentoring, and coaching skills, with an emphasis on creating inclusive and respectful environments.
Knowledge of volunteerism, local governance, and the dynamics of power within communities.
Commitment to VSO’s mission, values, and safeguarding standards.
Educational Background: A relevant degree or equivalent qualification in social sciences, development studies, or a related field is preferred. Additional training or certifications in community development, facilitation, or mentoring would be advantageous.
Experience: A minimum of 3-5 years of experience working with civil society organizations or in community development roles is required. Experience in capacity building, mentoring, and facilitating participatory processes is essential.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both spoken and written. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Makueni County would be an advantage, as it would facilitate better communication and engagement with community members.
Additional Notes: This position is a full-time volunteer role based in Kenya, specifically in Makueni County. Accommodation is not provided, as the opportunity is intended for individuals residing within the project area. Volunteers will receive an allowance paid in local currency, which is designed to cover reasonable living expenses in the country, but it may not be sufficient for sending money home.
