Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established to explore the fundamental structure of the universe. Founded in 1954, CERN employs thousands of physicists and engineers who utilize the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study fundamental particles. The organization operates in multiple countries and is committed to diversity as a core value since its inception. CERN's mission includes a strong focus on education, sharing knowledge with students and fostering a collaborative learning environment.
Job Overview: The internship program at CERN is designed for undergraduate students in technical or administrative fields who are eager to gain practical experience in a world-renowned research environment. Interns will have the opportunity to work alongside experts in various fields, contributing to ongoing projects while enhancing their skills and knowledge. This program is an excellent opportunity for students to bolster their CVs and gain insights into the workings of a prestigious scientific organization. Internships can last from 1 to 6 months, allowing students to immerse themselves in their chosen field and gain valuable hands-on experience.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns at CERN will engage in a variety of tasks depending on their field of study. Technical interns may work on projects related to applied physics, computing, engineering, or materials science, while administrative interns may assist in areas such as translation, accounting, or human resources. Responsibilities may include conducting research, assisting with project management, participating in team meetings, and contributing to the development of technical documentation. Interns are expected to maintain a proactive attitude, collaborate effectively with team members, and adhere to safety protocols while working in the laboratory or office environment.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the internship, candidates must be nationals of CERN Member or Associate Member States and must be full-time students pursuing a Technical/Administrative diploma, Bachelor, or Master degree. Candidates studying for a PhD are not eligible. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and maintain full-time student status throughout the internship. Proficiency in English and/or French is required, and candidates should have a strong academic background in relevant fields such as physics, engineering, or administrative studies.
Educational Background: Candidates must be enrolled in a full-time educational program, pursuing a diploma or degree in a relevant technical or administrative field. This includes areas such as applied physics, computing, mathematics, engineering disciplines, and various administrative fields. The educational institution must also provide proof of insurance coverage for the duration of the internship in the Geneva area.
Experience: While prior work experience is not mandatory, candidates should demonstrate a strong academic record and a keen interest in their field of study. The internship is primarily aimed at students who are looking to gain practical experience rather than those with extensive professional backgrounds.
Languages: Good working proficiency in English and/or French is mandatory for all applicants. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required for this position.
