• This intergovernmental programme aims to promote the development and implementation of environmental rule of law, strengthen related capacities in countries, and contribute to the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda. UNEP's Latin America and the Caribbean Office (LACO), located in Panama City, Panama, collaborates closely with the 33 countries in the region, integrating its activities into the Medium-Term Strategy and the Programme of Work approved by UNEA. The Regional Platform of Environmental Law Lecturers was launched to facilitate teaching and dissemination of environmental law in Latin America and the Caribbean, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among legal experts in the region.

Job Overview:
The position involves the translation of a 15-page model curriculum focused on teaching environmental law in Latin America and the Caribbean from Spanish to English. This curriculum is designed to promote a critical and interdisciplinary understanding of Environmental Law, integrating regional environmental principles, regulations, and challenges. The model curriculum is structured into six thematic units, each comprising various modules that cover essential topics such as International and Regional Environmental Law, Environmental Governance, and Climate Change. The role requires not only linguistic proficiency but also an understanding of the subject matter to ensure accurate and contextually appropriate translations. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain the integrity of the original content while making it accessible to an English-speaking audience, thereby contributing to the broader dissemination of environmental law education in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Translate the 15-page model curriculum from Spanish to English, ensuring accuracy and clarity in the translation.
• Familiarize oneself with the content of the curriculum to understand the context and nuances of environmental law as it pertains to Latin America and the Caribbean.
• Collaborate with UNEP staff and legal experts to clarify any ambiguities in the text and ensure that the translation reflects the intended meaning.
• Review and edit the translated document for grammatical correctness, coherence, and adherence to UNEP's standards.
• Provide feedback on the curriculum's content if necessary, suggesting improvements or adjustments based on the translation process.
• Meet deadlines for the translation project while maintaining high-quality standards.
• Participate in meetings or discussions related to the curriculum and its implementation as needed.

Required Qualifications:

• Proficiency in both Spanish and English, with a strong command of legal terminology in both languages.
• Experience in translation, particularly in legal or environmental contexts, is highly desirable.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality work under tight deadlines.
• Familiarity with environmental law and sustainable development concepts is an advantage.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in translation, linguistics, environmental law, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or certifications in translation or environmental law will be considered an asset.

Experience:
A minimum of 2-3 years of professional translation experience, particularly in legal or environmental contexts, is preferred. Experience working with international organizations or NGOs is a plus.

Languages:
Mandatory: Proficiency in Spanish and English. Good to have: Knowledge of other languages relevant to the region, such as Portuguese or French, may be beneficial.

Additional Notes:
This position is part-time and may involve remote work arrangements. The contract duration is project-based, contingent upon the completion of the translation task. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
