Job Overview:
The position of Consultant for Groundwater Resources Mapping is crucial in addressing the pressing issue of water scarcity in Lebanon. This role involves utilizing geospatial information system (GIS) technologies to digitize, classify, and analyze groundwater resources maps. The consultant will work closely with the Ministry of Energy and Water to enhance their groundwater database and improve the analytical capabilities of their staff. The expected outcome of this consultancy includes the production of hydrogeological maps, monthly reports on the digitization process, and fact sheets on selected national aquifers. The consultant will also be responsible for ensuring the quality of the maps and supporting geospatial analyses on selected aquifers, thereby contributing to informed decision-making regarding groundwater management in Lebanon.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will have a range of duties and responsibilities, including:
  • Digitizing and producing hydrogeological maps based on national data or verified resources.
  • Performing quality checks on electronic maps, including cleaning attribute tables and verifying classifications and color coding.
  • Supporting geospatial analyses on selected aquifers to assess their status and sustainability.
  • Assisting in the preparation of multilayer analyses using GIS software for chosen aquifers.
  • Providing support in other GIS-related activities as requested by the Ministry of Energy and Water.
  • Compiling monthly reports detailing the number of maps prepared, their types, updates, and lessons learned from the digitization process.
  • Creating fact sheets on selected national aquifers to inform stakeholders about their status and management needs.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a first university degree in geoscience, hydrogeology, or a related field. A Master’s degree is desirable, indicating a higher level of expertise in the subject matter. Additionally, all candidates are required to submit a copy of their educational degree, as incomplete applications will not be considered. A minimum of three years of professional work experience in geoscience and GIS analysis is mandatory, demonstrating the candidate's ability to perform the tasks required for this consultancy. Knowledge in groundwater modeling and proficiency in Python programming are also desirable qualifications that would enhance a candidate's application.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes at least a first university degree in geoscience, hydrogeology, or a related field. This foundational education is essential for understanding the complexities of groundwater resources and the application of GIS technologies. A Master’s degree is considered an asset, as it indicates advanced knowledge and skills in the field, which can contribute to more effective outcomes in the consultancy work.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of three years of professional work experience in geoscience and GIS analysis. This level of experience is necessary to ensure that the consultant is well-versed in the methodologies and practices related to groundwater mapping and analysis. Languages:
Fluency in English and Arabic is required for this position, as these are the working languages of the United Nations and ESCWA. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas: speaking, reading, writing, and understanding. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat, but it is not mandatory for this role.

The consultancy is expected to last for 2.5 months, providing a temporary but impactful opportunity to contribute to groundwater resource management in Lebanon. The position is remote, allowing for flexibility in work arrangements.
