Job Overview: The WASH Assistant plays a crucial role in the implementation and administration of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) projects in the Abyei Administrative Area (AAA). This position involves supporting the organization and supervision of volunteer teams, monitoring water quality and chlorination processes, and overseeing construction teams. The WASH Assistant will also be responsible for assessing and designing appropriate interventions to support internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities. The role requires a proactive approach to community engagement, ensuring that WASH activities are effectively communicated and implemented in collaboration with local stakeholders. The WASH Assistant will be expected to contribute to the overall success of the WASH program by ensuring that activities are aligned with DRC's mission and objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The WASH Assistant's duties include:
Program Implementation: Assist in planning, implementing, and monitoring WASH activities, including the development and maintenance of water supply and sanitation infrastructure, hygiene promotion, and community education campaigns.
Community Engagement: Conduct community meetings and training sessions on WASH issues, facilitate community-based planning, and build strong relationships with community members and local leaders.
Data Collection and Reporting: Collect and analyze data on WASH program indicators, prepare regular reports on activity progress, and maintain accurate records of all WASH activities.
Logistics and Procurement: Assist in the procurement and distribution of WASH supplies and materials, ensuring proper maintenance and utilization of WASH equipment and tools.
Emergency Response: Participate in emergency WASH response activities as needed, ensuring timely and effective support to affected communities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a diploma in a relevant field such as Civil Engineering, Water Engineering, or Fluid Mechanics. Additionally, applicants should have at least 1-2 years of experience in hygiene promotion or WASH-related projects within humanitarian contexts. A strong understanding of the WASH situation and needs in Abyei and South Sudan is essential, along with experience in borehole drilling, solar water-powered systems, and water quality analysis. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse groups are also required, as well as experience in community engagement and methodologies related to WASH.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a diploma in a relevant field, such as Civil Engineering, Water and Sanitation Engineering, or Fluid Mechanics. This educational foundation is critical for understanding the technical aspects of WASH projects and ensuring effective implementation.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 1-2 years of relevant experience in hygiene promotion or WASH-related projects, particularly in humanitarian settings. Experience working with local communities, children, and individuals with special needs is highly valued. Familiarity with methodologies such as CLTS, PHAST, SLTC, SBCC, and CHAST is also beneficial, as is experience in integrating WASH with other sectors such as Health, Nutrition, and Education.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, along with proficiency in local languages, particularly Dinka. This linguistic capability is essential for effective communication with community members and stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is based in Abyei and requires the candidate to have a local resident permit and labor card. The salary and conditions will be in accordance with the Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for national employees.
