Job Overview: The Project ManagementIntern will play a crucial role in supporting the UN-Habitat Regional Office for Africa (ROAf) in Nairobi, Kenya. The intern will work under the supervision of the Director of the Regional Office and will be involved in various tasks that contribute to the implementation of the office's strategic priorities. This includes assisting in the organization of meetings, workshops, and conferences, both in-person and virtual. The intern will also support the creation of written outputs, such as speeches and internal communications, and will engage in research related to urban development, housing, climate change, and humanitarian crises in Africa. The position is designed to provide valuable experience in project management within the context of a significant international organization, while also contributing to the broader goals of sustainable urbanization and community resilience.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including: assisting in the preparation and organization of meetings, workshops, and conferences; preparing invitations and coordinating with participants; managing schedules and ensuring logistical arrangements are in place; supporting the creation of written outputs such as speeches and internal communications; conducting research on urban development topics, particularly housing, climate change, and humanitarian crises; interacting with country offices to develop project concept notes; preparing discussions and webinars related to urban resilience; and supporting the reporting and communication efforts of the office. The intern may also undertake additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or have graduated with a Bachelor's degree, Master's, PhD, or equivalent. Candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications, particularly Microsoft Office Suite, and must demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Additionally, applicants should have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
Educational Background: The preferred areas of study for applicants include urban planning, environmental management, architecture, development studies, economics, or related fields. Candidates should have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies or have recently graduated within the last six months. The internship is open to students in the final year of their first university degree, Master's, or Ph.D. programs, or those who have completed such programs.
Experience: While professional work experience is not required for this internship, applicants should have a field of study closely related to the internship type they are applying for. Experience in developing, reviewing, or editing knowledge information in the form of research work, project documents, and other development documents is desirable. Candidates should also be able to summarize and analyze technical urban and housing content for various audiences.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is required for this internship position. Knowledge of another UN language, such as French, is desirable, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
