Job Overview: The Communications Officer position is crucial for the implementation of the communications strategy at the WFP Country Office. This role involves supporting and delivering a variety of communications activities that include social media management, content creation, media relations, and branding. The officer will work closely with the Head of the Communications, Marketing and Advocacy/Partnerships Unit to enhance the visibility and reputation of WFP, aligning with the goals outlined in WFP’s Country Strategic Plan (2022-27). The officer will be responsible for developing high-quality information products, collecting audiovisual content, and writing human interest stories that showcase WFP's work to both internal and external audiences. The role also includes preparing press releases, speeches, and key messages, as well as organizing visibility events in collaboration with stakeholders. Overall, the position requires a proactive approach to communication and a commitment to promoting WFP's mission and values.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Communications Officer will have a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: contributing to the implementation of the country communications strategy and project communication work plans; developing high-quality information products for print and electronic platforms; collecting audiovisual content and writing human interest stories; providing specialized support for the production of video, photo, and radio products; generating donor-specific visibility content; preparing drafts of press releases, speeches, and key messages; organizing visibility events in collaboration with external stakeholders; liaising with local and international media outlets; developing engaging social media content; monitoring and analyzing traditional and social media; supporting capacity building of WFP staff on communication aspects; and contributing to the implementation of corporate branding and marking plans. The officer will also be expected to follow standard emergency preparedness practices to support WFP's rapid response to crises.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess excellent writing skills in English, with a proven track record in communications, including experience in writing press releases, human interest stories, and social media content. The ability to organize visibility events and engage with local media is essential. Strong communication skills and techniques in media, social media, campaigns, and content production are required, along with problem-solving and analytical skills. The candidate should be able to work under pressure and as part of a team, with knowledge of the political, social, and economic context of Senegal being advantageous.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree in Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, Communications, or a related field is desired. Alternatively, a first university degree with additional years of related work experience and/or training/courses may be acceptable. This educational background is essential to ensure that the candidate has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to perform effectively in the role.
Experience: A minimum of one year of postgraduate professional experience is required for this position. Additional years of relevant professional work experience in communications-related fields are desirable. This experience should demonstrate the candidate's ability to handle communications tasks effectively and contribute to the overall goals of the WFP.
Languages: Fluency in English (level C) is mandatory, and proficiency in the local language of the duty station, if different, is also required. This linguistic capability is crucial for effective communication with diverse stakeholders and for the successful execution of the role's responsibilities.
