Job Overview:
The position of Consultant for the Greening the Blue Data Platform is crucial for enhancing the effectiveness of the SUN team in utilizing reported data. The consultant will play a key role in enabling additional analytical reporting linked to the Strategy Phase I of the Greening the Blue initiative. This role involves meeting methodological and analytical needs for the elaboration of Greening the Blue reporting, including necessary updates to the Inventory Management Plan. The consultant will work closely with the Global Service Centre and UNEP SUN to ensure that the data collected from UN entities is accurate, reliable, and effectively utilized to drive action towards improving internal environmental sustainability across the UN system. The consultant will also be responsible for reviewing and correcting data submissions, ensuring quality and accuracy in the data imported into the new Greening the Blue Data Platform, and supporting the overall goal of mainstreaming environmental considerations into UN operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will undertake a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
  • Completing the importation of 'Bring Your Own' (BYO) data from Greening the Blue reporting entities into a format that is compatible with the new data platform.
  • Reviewing the current Greening the Blue Data Platform to ensure accurate calculations and processing of results for entity-level, regional, and country-level reporting.
  • Researching and identifying appropriate calculation methodologies for updating the platform and Inventory Management Plan (IMP).
  • Providing inputs to the Global Service Centre in line with results calculations and report generation.
  • Ensuring that the data submitted by UN entities is reviewed and corrected to enhance its usability in the new data platform.
  • Supporting the SUN project in analyzing and evaluating existing data to identify opportunities for improvement in environmental sustainability practices within the UN system.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position must possess a master's degree in an environmental field, engineering, or natural sciences. Additionally, at least 2 years of experience in environmental science, engineering, and/or data analytics is required. Proficiency in data analytic software applications such as Python, Excel, and PowerBI is essential. Experience with Annual Greenhouse Gas Inventories is also required, along with familiarity with scenario forecasting and carbon footprinting, which would be considered an asset. Experience working with international organizations and specifically with the Greening the Blue initiative is highly desired, as it demonstrates an understanding of the UN's environmental goals and practices.

Educational Background:
Candidates must hold a master's degree in a relevant field such as environmental science, engineering, or natural sciences. This educational background is critical as it provides the necessary theoretical foundation and understanding of environmental issues, data analytics, and sustainability practices that are essential for the role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in environmental science, engineering, or data analytics. This experience should include practical knowledge of data management and analysis, particularly in the context of environmental sustainability. Familiarity with the UN system and its operations is highly beneficial, as it will enable the consultant to navigate the complexities of working within an international organization effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory for this position. Additionally, knowledge of another UN language is considered an asset, as it enhances communication capabilities within the diverse and multicultural environment of the UN.
