Job Overview: The Director position is a senior role within the Macroeconomics Research Division (ERMR) of the Economic Research and Development Impact Department (ERDI) at ADB. The Director will be responsible for leading the planning and execution of the division's vision, goals, strategies, and work plans to align with ADB's overall objectives. This role involves undertaking applied macroeconomic research, assessing macroeconomic impacts and trends, and analyzing factors affecting economic growth and development. The Director will collaborate with country teams, oversee the quality of work produced, and ensure that the division meets its goals. The position requires strong leadership and strategic management skills, as well as the ability to foster relationships both internally and externally to advance ADB's mission.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Director will have a wide range of responsibilities, including establishing and cascading the division's vision and goals, leading the planning and implementation of work plans, and monitoring the quality of outputs. The Director will oversee the preparation of the Asian Development Outlook (ADO), guiding the writing process, reviewing drafts, and coordinating inputs from economists. Additionally, the Director will set the direction for the ADO, manage research activities, and oversee the production of the Asia Bond Monitor reports. The role also involves representing ADB in external policy discussions, maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, and leading major research programs in macroeconomics, finance, and development. The Director will be responsible for managing division operations, supporting the Chief Economist, and leading staff supervision and development.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a PhD in Economics, Econometrics, or a related field, along with at least 15 years of substantive experience in economic or development research at various levels. International experience in development across multiple countries is essential, as is experience applying economics in operational or strategic planning within multilateral development institutions. Strong analytical capabilities, a solid record of research and publications in recognized journals, and experience in media relations are also required. Candidates should demonstrate cross-cultural skills and the ability to manage a team of qualified economists effectively. Proficiency in written and verbal English is mandatory.
Educational Background: A PhD in Economics, Econometrics, or a related field is required for this position. This advanced degree should provide a strong foundation in economic theory and quantitative analysis, which are critical for the role's responsibilities.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in economic or development research, with a proven track record of working in various countries and contexts. This experience should include roles that involve strategic planning and policy development within multilateral development institutions, showcasing the ability to apply economic principles effectively in real-world scenarios.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory for this position, both written and verbal. While English is the primary language of communication at ADB, knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly those relevant to the Asia-Pacific region.
Additional Notes: This is a fixed-term appointment for a managerial position, initially for a period of 3 years or until the staff member's Normal Retirement Date (NRD), whichever comes first. ADB may choose to renew the appointment for an additional fixed term of up to 3 years based on organizational needs and the staff member's competencies.
