Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. It employs physicists and engineers who utilize the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. CERN has been at the forefront of particle physics research since its inception, and it operates in multiple countries, fostering a diverse and inclusive environment as part of its core mission.

Job Overview:
The Research Fellowship Programme at CERN is designed for PhD holders in experimental physics, particularly those with up to six years of experience post-PhD. This program is not for a specific job but rather a pathway for PhD graduates to engage in research within various groups at CERN. Candidates will have the opportunity to express their motivations during the application process and can attach a motivation letter for greater expression. It is important to note that candidates whose interests lie solely in theoretical physics or applied science and engineering should apply for the respective theoretical or applied physics fellowships instead.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As a Research Fellow, you will be expected to engage in cutting-edge research within CERN's experimental physics groups. This includes collaborating with other researchers, contributing to ongoing projects, and potentially leading your own research initiatives. You will be involved in the design and execution of experiments, data analysis, and the dissemination of findings through publications and presentations. Additionally, you will participate in team meetings, contribute to the development of new research proposals, and may have opportunities to mentor junior researchers or students.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for the Research Fellowship Programme, candidates must be nationals of CERN Member or Associate Member States, with a limited number of positions available for candidates from Non-Member States. Applicants must hold or be close to obtaining a PhD in particle physics or a closely related discipline. If the PhD is not yet completed, the defense date must be scheduled, and the degree should be finalized within six months after the job posting deadline. Candidates should also have no more than six years of research experience post-PhD by the application deadline. It is important to note that current CERN staff members are not eligible for this fellowship.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a PhD in particle physics or a closely related field that aligns with CERN's experimental physics program. This educational background is crucial as it ensures that the fellows have the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to contribute effectively to the research being conducted at CERN.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have up to six years of research experience after obtaining their PhD. This experience should ideally be in areas related to experimental physics, allowing candidates to bring relevant skills and insights to their research work at CERN.

Languages:
While the primary working language at CERN is English, proficiency in additional languages can be beneficial. However, English is mandatory for all candidates, as it is the language of communication within the organization and for scientific publications.

Additional Notes:
The fellowship typically lasts for 24 months, with a possibility for a small number of outstanding candidates to be offered a 36-month fellowship. The stipend ranges from 6,808 to 7,218 Swiss francs per month, net of tax. Fellows will also receive comprehensive health coverage for themselves and their families, along with membership in the CERN Pension Fund. Additional benefits may include installation grants, family allowances, and travel expenses to and from Geneva. Fellows will accrue 2.5 days of paid leave per month. Applications must be submitted by 25 August 2025, and candidates will be notified of their selection by the end of November 2025.
