Job Overview:
The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch is seeking part-time student interns to work in the Tokyo office from September 2025 through the end of March 202
  • This internship offers students the opportunity to engage in various projects related to fundraising and event management. Interns will participate in lectures, trainings, and workshops focused on human rights, and will have the chance to network with other interns, volunteers, and HRW staff. This position is designed to allow students to apply their academic knowledge in a professional environment, enhancing their understanding of human rights issues while gaining practical experience in the nonprofit sector.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for supporting fundraising efforts, which include assisting with the planning and execution of annual charity dinners and other donor events. They will manage and input data into databases, conduct research on potential donors, and help create marketing materials. Additionally, interns will coordinate logistics for large-scale events and attend donor briefings and events alongside HRW staff. Other projects may be assigned based on the intern's interests and skills, providing a dynamic and engaging work experience.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must be currently enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students during the internship period. It is preferred that candidates have completed coursework related to human rights. Strong organizational skills, a proactive attitude, and reliability are essential, along with a keen attention to detail. A demonstrated interest in human rights is highly desirable. Proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Office, Excel, and internet research skills is required. Candidates with graphic design and video editing skills will be given special consideration. Advanced proficiency in both Japanese and English, in writing and speaking, is also highly desirable.

Educational Background:
Candidates should be pursuing a degree in a relevant field, ideally with coursework focused on human rights or related disciplines. This educational background will help interns understand the context and significance of the work they will be involved in during their internship.

Experience:
While prior experience in fundraising or event management is not mandatory, any relevant experience will be beneficial. Interns should demonstrate a strong interest in human rights and a willingness to learn and engage with the work of HRW. This internship is particularly suited for students looking to gain practical experience in a professional setting while contributing to meaningful human rights advocacy.

Languages:
Proficiency in both Japanese and English is mandatory, with advanced skills in reading, writing, and speaking required. This bilingual capability is essential for effective communication within the organization and with external stakeholders. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not required.

Additional Notes:
The internship is part-time, and interns must possess valid work authorization in Japan for the duration of the internship. Compensation includes a daily stipend of 800 yen for lunch expenses and reimbursement for transportation costs up to 2000 yen per day. Interns may also have the opportunity to earn academic credit for their work, depending on their educational institution's policies.
