Job Overview:
The Asia Division Intern position at Human Rights Watch in Tokyo is designed for students who are eager to engage in human rights issues both domestically and internationally. The internship will run part-time from April 2026 through the end of September 2026, providing students with the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in a professional environment. Interns will focus on various projects related to human rights issues in Japan, allowing them to gain practical experience while contributing to meaningful advocacy efforts. Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will assist with HRW's research on human rights issues related to Japan, which includes both domestic and international contexts. They will conduct desk research, analyze data, and help organize advocacy efforts concerning various issues in Asia and beyond. Additionally, interns will attend external meetings with staff in the Asia division and may be assigned other projects that align with their interests and skills. This hands-on experience is designed to help interns develop their research and advocacy skills while contributing to HRW's mission.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must be currently enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students for the duration of the internship. Relevant coursework in human rights or related fields is encouraged. Strong organizational skills, a proactive approach to projects, and reliability with attention to detail are essential. A demonstrated interest in human rights is highly desirable, along with proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office and internet research capabilities. Candidates must also possess advanced proficiency in both Japanese and English, both in writing and speaking, to effectively communicate and engage with diverse stakeholders.

Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to be enrolled in a university program, either at the undergraduate or graduate level, during the internship period. Students with coursework related to human rights, social justice, or international relations are particularly encouraged to apply, as this background will enhance their ability to contribute to HRW's work.

Experience:
While prior experience in human rights or related fields is not mandatory, any relevant experience, such as internships, volunteer work, or academic projects, will be considered an asset. Languages:

Additional Notes:
The internship is part-time, running from April 2026 to September 2026, and applicants must possess valid work authorization in Japan for the duration of the internship. Interns will receive a gross stipend of 800 yen per day for lunch expenses and will be reimbursed for transportation costs up to 2000 yen per day. Students may also have the opportunity to arrange academic credit for their internship, depending on their educational institution's policies.
