Job Overview: The position involves overseeing a project aimed at improving water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities in schools located in informal settlements of Nairobi, Kenya. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by schools in low-income urban areas, particularly in relation to inadequate WASH facilities exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing strategies to enhance access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene practices in schools, thereby promoting a healthy learning environment and ensuring regular school attendance among pupils. This includes constructing and rehabilitating WASH facilities, conducting hygiene promotion activities, and providing capacity building and training for school staff and students.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities for this position include:
Constructing rooftop rainwater collection systems or connecting schools to the county government water supply system.
Installing collection gutters, screens, filters, and downspouts, incorporating first-flush systems, or implementing innovative technologies such as atmospheric water generators.
Procuring and installing water storage tanks with a capacity of 5,000 liters to ensure adequate water supply for pupils.
Constructing and rehabilitating separate single-sex toilets that are gender-friendly.
Designing and constructing improved solid waste management systems in the selected schools.
Conducting hygiene promotion activities and establishing health clubs to raise awareness about water conservation and hygiene practices.
Undertaking capacity building and training for pupils, schoolteachers, and management teams on good hygiene practices and maintenance of rainwater harvesting systems.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong qualifications in project management, particularly in the WASH sector. They should have experience working in urban low-income areas and a proven track record of implementing similar projects. Knowledge of innovative technologies related to water supply and sanitation is essential. Strong communication and organizational skills are required, along with the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and community organizations. Familiarity with the local context and challenges faced by schools in Nairobi is highly desirable.
Educational Background: A relevant degree in environmental science, public health, civil engineering, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in WASH or project management will be an advantage. Candidates should also have a strong understanding of the principles of sustainable development and the ability to apply them in practical settings.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of experience in project implementation, particularly in the WASH sector. Experience working with schools or educational institutions in urban low-income areas is highly desirable. Proven experience in managing budgets, timelines, and stakeholder relationships is essential for this role.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of Swahili is an advantage, as it will facilitate communication with local stakeholders and communities. Additional language skills may be beneficial, depending on the specific context of the project.
Additional Notes: This position is part of a project that is expected to commence on 01 August 2025 and will be completed within 5 months. UN-Habitat will contribute approximately USD 55,000 towards the implementation of the project, which will be executed through an Agreement of Cooperation.
