Job Overview: The Senior Water Specialist position at the World Bank is designed for an individual who will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of water investment operations in Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, and Rwanda. Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Water Specialist will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Providing project implementation support for water investment operations in the specified countries, focusing on engineering quality control and documentation.
Supervising consultants and technical specialists to ensure compliance with the World Bank's standards.
Coordinating with stakeholders and internal teams to ensure timely project completion and effective management of water resources.
Advising government counterparts on project implementation and identifying potential challenges.
Supporting the development of future water projects and adapting global practices to local needs.
Contributing to the preparation and appraisal of water lending operations and engaging in strategic program development within the unit.
Participating in knowledge-sharing activities and performing additional duties as assigned by the Practice Manager.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s or Ph.D. degree in relevant technical fields such as civil engineering, hydrology, geology, or environmental sciences. A minimum of eight years of relevant experience in water infrastructure, supply, irrigation, or urban development is required, with a preference for experience in the African context. Familiarity with water resources management, urban infrastructure, and local government strengthening is essential. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical writing skills and the ability to engage effectively with local communities and decision-makers.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes advanced degrees in technical fields related to water management, such as civil engineering, hydrology, or environmental sciences. A Ph.D. is preferred, indicating a high level of expertise and knowledge in the field.
Experience: The position requires at least eight years of relevant experience in water-related projects, particularly in the African context. Experience in managing complex water projects that involve environmental and social safeguards, as well as multi-sector coordination, is highly desirable. Familiarity with the World Bank's operations and policies is also beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both spoken and written. Knowledge of Kiswahili or another local language of Kenya is considered a plus, enhancing communication with local stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This is a locally recruited staff position based in Nairobi, Kenya, with a term duration of two years.
