Job Overview: The Regional Advisor for Africa plays a crucial role in enhancing the understanding of the regional context and expanding key networks and engagement with relevant stakeholders. This position is integral to the design and implementation of effective advocacy strategies directed towards governments, non-governmental stakeholders, pharmaceutical companies, and the research community in Africa. The advisor will work closely with the Regional Coordinator and the heads of analysis and advocacy to support MSF's access strategic objectives both regionally and globally. The role requires a deep understanding of MSF's access priorities, particularly those pertinent to West and Central Africa, where the organization faces significant challenges related to healthcare product access amidst shrinking funds. The advisor will also identify trends and opportunities within the region, contributing to the development of advocacy strategies that align with MSF's global objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Regional Advisor for West and Central Africa is tasked with several key responsibilities: 1) Develop systems for continuous monitoring and analysis of policies and stakeholders that influence MSF's access strategic objectives and regional priorities. 2) Maintain a comprehensive understanding of MSF access priorities relevant to the region. 3) Identify regional trends and opportunities, advising on potential threats and new initiatives. 4) Conduct actor mapping and contribute to stakeholder analysis for each priority area. 5) Collaborate with the regional coordinator to establish regional and country-level advocacy objectives. 6) Contribute to the formulation of specific regional advocacy strategies that contextualize global MSF Access strategic objectives. 7) Strengthen engagement with key stakeholders relevant to MSF's regional and global strategic objectives. 8) Ensure alignment with the global strategy and report on relevant meetings and interactions to the regional coordinator and MSF access teams. 9) Share insights on trends that may impact MSF operations in West and Central Africa. 10) Provide support in defining and implementing tailored advocacy plans and strategies as needed. 11) Assist with MSF ACCESS initiatives of MSF sections in the region when requested.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in advocacy, public health, or a related field, with a demonstrated ability to engage with diverse stakeholders. Excellent analytical skills are essential, as is the capacity to synthesize complex information into actionable strategies. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are required to effectively convey MSF's objectives and engage with various audiences. The ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment and adapt to changing circumstances is crucial. Candidates should also have a proven track record of developing and implementing advocacy strategies in a relevant context.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in public health, international relations, political science, or a related field is required. A master's degree in a relevant discipline is preferred and may enhance a candidate's competitiveness for the position. Additional training or certifications in advocacy, public health policy, or humanitarian assistance would be advantageous.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in advocacy, public health, or humanitarian work, particularly within the African context. Experience working with NGOs, governmental organizations, or international agencies is highly desirable. Familiarity with MSF's operations and access issues in the region will be considered a significant asset. Proven experience in stakeholder engagement and policy analysis is essential for success in this role.
Languages: Fluency in English and French is mandatory, as these are the primary languages of communication within the organization and the region. Proficiency in additional languages relevant to the West and Central African context would be considered a valuable asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with a broader range of stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is a full-time, permanent contract, reporting directly to the Regional Coordinator for West and Central Africa.
