Job Overview:
The Urban Planning and Development Consultant will provide technical expertise in urban planning to the Planning, Finance & Economy Section (PFES) of UN-Habitat. This role involves collaborating closely with the PFES team to support urban and territorial planning initiatives. The consultant will be responsible for analyzing urban design proposals, conducting research, developing project proposals, and advising on participatory processes in urban planning. The position requires strong analytical skills and the ability to produce graphic materials and reports related to urban planning projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be tasked with several key responsibilities, including:
  • Providing technical expertise and input in urban design proposals and urban planning projects.
  • Conducting data analysis, collection, interpretation, and spatial analysis.
  • Producing desk and field research on urban planning topics.
  • Developing project proposals focused on urban planning and regeneration.
  • Advising on and implementing participatory processes for urban planning projects.
  • Creating materials for events, outreach, communications, and capacity-building workshops.
  • Developing graphic materials and publications related to urban planning.
  • Drafting progress reports on project implementation, including documentation and knowledge management.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a First Level university degree in geography, urban planning, architecture, urban development, or a related field. An advanced degree may substitute for the first level degree if accompanied by two years of qualifying work experience. Additionally, candidates should have at least four years of relevant work experience in urban development, planning, and design, with proven experience in preparing graphical materials using computer-assisted design tools. Experience in urban planning projects, particularly in areas such as urban resilience, mobility, and project finance, is also required.

Educational Background:
The educational requirement for this position includes a First Level university degree in a relevant field such as geography, urban planning, architecture, or urban development. An advanced degree can be accepted in lieu of the first level degree if the candidate has two years of qualifying work experience in a related area.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of four years of relevant work experience in urban development and planning. Candidates should have direct experience in urban planning projects and processes, with a focus on urban resilience, mobility, project finance, and data systems. Proven experience in preparing graphical materials using computer-assisted design tools is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Portuguese is required for this position, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is one of the official working languages of the UN.
