Duties and Responsibilities: The intern's responsibilities will include conducting short-term desk research assignments and basic legal research using available resources, such as reviewing media, policy papers, and academic reports. The intern will monitor legislation and policies related to human rights in Ghana, particularly those affecting women and minorities. They will conduct remote interviews with victims and witnesses of human rights violations under close supervision, execute data analysis to identify key issues, and support the drafting of basic reports. Additionally, the intern will compile case histories, research relevant state policies, present information compellingly, participate in advocacy strategy meetings, and attend remote conferences and events related to ongoing projects. The intern will also assist in the production and release of reports, press releases, and other written materials.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program for the duration of the internship. Recent graduates are also eligible to apply. A strong interest in gender and sexual minorities issues in Africa, particularly related to LGBT rights in West and Central Africa, is essential. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to human rights or international issues, with relevant coursework being highly desirable. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and internet applications, along with experience in social science research, is required. Compensation for the internship is set at a gross monthly stipend of KES 30,000, which will be pro-rated based on the actual hours worked. This stipend is intended to help offset living expenses in accordance with HRW policy. Interns may also have the opportunity to arrange academic credit for their internship, depending on the requirements of their educational institutions.
