Job Overview: The Research Assistant position is situated within Cluster 2, focusing on Gender Justice, Population, and Inclusive Development at ESCWA. The role involves supporting the Cluster Leader and designated officers by conducting research, compiling data, and assisting in the evaluation of various programs and projects. The Research Assistant will be responsible for gathering and analyzing information from multiple sources, maintaining databases, and preparing reports and presentations. This position requires a proactive approach to data management and a commitment to ensuring the accuracy and clarity of information. The Research Assistant will also play a key role in disseminating information and supporting public awareness campaigns related to specific issues, thereby contributing to the overall mission of ESCWA.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Research Assistant will undertake a variety of tasks, including:
Researching, extracting, and compiling basic information and technical data on specific programs/projects and related topics.
Sorting, consolidating, and processing data for entry into relevant databases.
Monitoring developments and issues in assigned areas by collecting and analyzing materials from various sources.
Assembling original statistical material and adjusting reported data from different sources for database entry.
Evaluating and examining data sets for accuracy and validity.
Maintaining relevant computerized databases.
Preparing reports, presentations, tables, lists, graphs, and charts for review by senior officers.
Drafting abstracts and bibliographic descriptions for documents and publications.
Organizing and disseminating relevant UN and media information. 1
Coordinating press briefings and public awareness campaigns. 1
Providing guidance and training to new or junior staff. 1
Assisting with data analysis and preparation of presentations and reports. 1
Updating information materials such as web pages or brochures. 1
Performing other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. An advanced university degree in Applied Economics is desirable. The position requires a strong foundation in research methodologies and data analysis, as well as familiarity with statistical software and econometric modeling. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, effective communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Knowledge of internal policies and procedures within the UN system is an asset, as is the ability to incorporate gender perspectives into all areas of work.
Educational Background: A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. However, an advanced university degree in Applied Economics is highly desirable, as it provides the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge for the role. Candidates with a first-level university degree may have their minimum years of relevant experience requirement reduced, making it essential for applicants to highlight their educational qualifications in their applications.
Experience: The position requires at least five years of experience in collecting and researching data across various areas of social and economic development or a related field. For candidates with a first-level university degree or higher, the minimum experience requirement is reduced to three years. Additionally, candidates should have at least one year of experience in data analytics or a related area, with two years of experience in using statistical software, particularly STATA, being desirable. Experience in econometric modeling and forecasting methods is also preferred, as these skills are crucial for informing policy design and analysis.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable, given that it is also a working language at ESCWA. Candidates should demonstrate fluency in all four areas of language proficiency (speaking, reading, writing, and understanding) for English, while a confident level in two of the four areas for Arabic is acceptable.
Additional Notes: This position is temporarily available until December 31, 2025, with the possibility of extension based on funding availability and the continued need for the role. The position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that applicants must be authorized to work for the United Nations in Beirut.
