Job Overview:
The Humanitarian Communications and Media Lead will play a critical role in shaping the organization's communication strategy during humanitarian crises. This position requires a dynamic individual who can effectively manage media relations, develop compelling narratives, and ensure that the organization's messaging aligns with its mission and values. The lead will be responsible for crafting press releases, coordinating media events, and engaging with various stakeholders to amplify the organization's voice in the humanitarian sector. Additionally, the role involves overseeing the production of communication materials, including reports, social media content, and multimedia resources that highlight the organization's impact and initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy for humanitarian responses, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Serve as the primary media contact, responding to inquiries and facilitating interviews with key personnel.
  • Create and distribute press releases, media advisories, and other communication materials to promote the organization's work.
  • Monitor media coverage and analyze trends to inform communication strategies.
  • Collaborate with program teams to gather stories and data that illustrate the organization's impact on affected communities.
  • Manage social media accounts, creating engaging content that resonates with diverse audiences.
  • Organize and participate in media briefings, workshops, and other events to enhance the organization's visibility.
  • Train staff on effective communication practices and media engagement.
  • Ensure that all communications adhere to the organization's branding and messaging guidelines. 1
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of communication efforts and make recommendations for improvement.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in communications, public relations, or a related field, preferably within the humanitarian sector.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce high-quality content under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
  • Familiarity with media relations and experience in engaging with journalists and media outlets.
  • Proficiency in digital communication tools and social media platforms.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess communication effectiveness and audience engagement.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field is required. A master's degree or additional certifications in a relevant area would be an advantage.

Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in communications or media relations, with a focus on humanitarian or development contexts. Experience in crisis communication and managing media during emergencies is highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those relevant to the regions where the organization operates, is considered an asset.

Additional Notes:
This position is a secondment opportunity, which may involve a temporary transfer from another organization or department. The role is full-time and may require occasional travel to field locations.
