Job Overview: The Environmental and Social Safeguards Specialist will play a crucial role in ensuring that UNICEF's projects adhere to environmental and social standards. This position requires a deep understanding of the environmental and social impacts of development projects, particularly those funded by the World Bank. The specialist will be responsible for monitoring and evaluating the environmental and social aspects of these projects, ensuring compliance with the World Bank's Environmental and Social Framework. The role involves collaboration with various stakeholders, including local communities, government partners, and UNICEF staff, to enhance the quality of services and support provided to children and families. The specialist will also be expected to contribute to the development of environmental instruments and frameworks that align with UNICEF's mission and values.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Monitor and evaluate environmental and social impacts of development projects funded by the World Bank.
Ensure compliance with the World Bank's Environmental and Social Framework (ESF).
Collaborate with local communities, government partners, and UNICEF staff to improve service quality.
Develop and implement environmental instruments for projects, ensuring alignment with UNICEF's standards.
Conduct training and capacity-building sessions for stakeholders on environmental and social safeguards.
Prepare reports and documentation related to environmental and social assessments.
Stay updated on best practices and policies related to environmental and social safeguards.
Advocate for children's rights and well-being in the context of environmental and social issues.
Required Qualifications:
A Master's degree in Environmental Sciences, Geography, Ecosystem Management, or related fields with at least 5 years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree in the same fields with at least 7 years of experience.
Proven experience in environmental and social monitoring of World Bank-funded development projects.
Certification or training in the World Bank's Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF).
Experience in preparing and managing Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Project Environmental and Social Management Plans (PESMPs).
Strong knowledge of environmental and social safeguard policies of the World Bank.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a Master's degree (BAC +5) in Environmental Sciences, Geography, Ecosystem Management, or similar fields. Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree (BAC +3) in these areas is acceptable if accompanied by significant relevant experience.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in environmental and social safeguards, particularly in the context of World Bank-funded projects. Experience in developing countries and familiarity with emergency situations are desirable.
Languages: Fluency in French is required. Knowledge of English or another UN official language (Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, or Russian) or a local language is considered an asset.
