Job Overview: The Climate Action Subprogramme Coordinator plays a crucial role in the Climate Change Division of UNEP, focusing on the organization's climate action strategy. This position involves overseeing special initiatives and monitoring the organization's performance in relation to climate action. The coordinator will support the coherent design and implementation of the subprogramme across various divisions and regional offices, ensuring alignment with the Medium-Term Strategy (MTS) and Programme of Work (PoW). The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders to facilitate strategic planning processes, reporting, and analysis of results related to the Climate Action subprogramme. The coordinator will also assist in drafting sections of the MTS and PoW, ensuring that climate action initiatives are effectively integrated into UNEP's broader objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Climate Action Subprogramme Coordinator will be responsible for a range of duties, including:
Portfolio Coordination: Supporting the design and implementation of the subprogramme, reviewing project concepts, providing guidance on thematic alignment, and participating in project review committees.
Strategic Planning: Assisting in strategic planning processes, drafting climate action sections of the MTS and PoW, and supporting the development of results frameworks.
Reporting and Analyzing Results: Compiling results related to the Climate Action subprogramme, supporting performance reporting, conducting quality checks on submissions, and identifying challenges in results reporting.
Capacity Building: Supporting capacity building on Results-Based Management (RBM) across UNEP. The coordinator will also be involved in regular briefings with data contributors and assist in preparing inputs for various reports and debates related to the subprogramme.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree, preferably a Master’s degree or equivalent, in environmental sciences, natural resources management, international development, or related fields. A first-level university degree combined with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Additionally, candidates should have at least two years of experience at the national or international level in sustainable development, natural resources management, or implementation of environmental-related programmes and projects. Experience with developmental projects, climate change, and contexts in developing countries is considered an asset.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in relevant fields such as environmental sciences, natural resources management, or international development. A Master’s degree is preferred, but a first-level university degree with additional qualifying experience may also be acceptable. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of climate action and sustainable development.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of two years of relevant experience at either the national or international level. This experience should be in areas such as sustainable development, natural resources management, or the implementation of environmental-related programmes and projects. Prior experience with developmental projects and climate change, particularly in developing country contexts, is highly desirable and will enhance the candidate's suitability for the role.
Languages: Fluency in English, both oral and written, is mandatory for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Additionally, a working knowledge of French is beneficial, as it is another official language of the UN. Proficiency in another UN language would also be considered an asset, enhancing communication and collaboration within the diverse international environment of UNEP.
