Job Overview:
The Director of Strategic Funding is responsible for designing and implementing funding strategies that will secure financial resources to support the various technical projects of the organization. This role involves strengthening relationships with current funders and promoting loyalty while identifying and developing new funding opportunities in both public and private sectors. The Director will work collaboratively with technical areas to expand the institutional project portfolio and contribute to the strategic objectives of WRI. The position requires a proactive approach to fundraising and collaboration with program teams to understand project complexities and develop tailored funding strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plan and execute funding activities for Mexico, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Establish collaborative relationships with foundations, institutions, and organizations at local and international levels to secure funding for institutional projects.
  • Develop and maintain a database of potential funders and ensure its relevance.
  • Collaborate with programmatic areas to support their projects through funding initiatives.
  • Engage in fundraising activities, particularly with international funders and the global office.
  • Contribute to project development strategies to increase institutional revenue.
  • Oversee the existing donor portfolio and expand its scope.
  • Take overall responsibility for the fundraising strategy and development at WRI Mexico.
  • Work closely with program directors to increase project alternatives and funding opportunities. 1
  • Learn about project complexities and contribute to financial support strategies. 1
  • Refine and strengthen existing or new project proposals and strategies.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in International Relations, International Trade, Public Policy, Social Sciences, or related fields.
  • 8 to 10 years of progressive experience in business development, corporate social responsibility, sustainability, and relationship management with public and private sector organizations.
  • Extensive experience in fundraising and institutional relationship management.
  • Proven track record in developing and implementing funding strategies and public policy actions.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree is required, preferably in fields such as International Relations, International Trade, Public Policy, or Social Sciences. Advanced degrees or certifications in related areas may be advantageous but are not mandatory.

Experience:
Candidates should possess 8 to 10 years of relevant experience in progressively responsible roles, particularly in business development, fundraising, and institutional relations. Experience in public policy and sustainability initiatives is highly desirable, along with a strong background in securing funding from diverse sources.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as the role requires extensive communication with international stakeholders. Proficiency in Spanish is also essential, given the local context and the need to engage with local partners and funders. Additional languages may be considered an asset but are not required.
