The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Mexico City is part of the global network of UN Information Centres. Established to promote public understanding and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations, UNIC Mexico City serves as the principal source of information about the UN system in Mexico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic. The organization is dedicated to engaging local and regional partners and communicating the work of the UN to local audiences in their languages. Since the operationalization of the UN development system reform on January 1, 2019, UNIC Mexico City has been integrated with the Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in Mexico, enhancing its role in raising awareness of the UN's work in the region, particularly in relation to the new UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2026-2031.

Job Overview:
The Communications Officer position is located within the UNIC in Mexico City, specifically under the Information Centres Service of the Campaigns and Country Operations Division of the Department of Global Communications. The role is crucial for designing a communications plan and key products for the UN Mexico Results Report. The incumbent will contribute to the development of a new UN Mexico Communications strategy, which includes planning and implementing various communications activities and public information products. The officer will also conduct a needs assessment for the UN Communications Group (UNCG) to enhance their capacity in implementing the UN Communications Strategy, particularly focusing on Information Integrity. This position requires the creation of public information content for various platforms, aligned with UN International Days and other priorities, under the supervision of the Director of UNIC Mexico.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will be responsible for several key duties, including:
  • Developing an agreed UN Results Report communications plan targeting key audiences through human-interest stories, news articles, and other products.
  • Monitoring mis/disinformation trends in Mexico and contributing to interagency initiatives to combat these issues, particularly in relation to the Declaration on Information Integrity on Climate Change and the FIFA World Cup 202
  • Creating and maintaining a database of communities of practice for the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework and Information Integrity.
  • Conducting a needs assessment of UNCG capacities to implement the activities related to the UN Results Report and Information Integrity.
  • Designing a UN Information Integrity workplan and identifying tools and mechanisms to strengthen UNCG capacities.
  • Creating public information content for web, social media, and media outlets, ensuring alignment with UN global and country priorities.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a first-level university degree in communications, journalism, international relations, or a related field. Additionally, five years of experience in communication is required, including experience in writing for web and social media or mass media. Proven experience in developing digital content and creating multimedia materials for social media is essential. Candidates should also have experience in graphic design, including creating infographics and promotional materials for both print and digital platforms. Proficiency in graphic design tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign is necessary, along with experience in capturing and editing high-quality photographs during events. Fluency in Microsoft Office programs is required, and previous experience with UN agencies or similar international organizations is desirable.

Educational Background:
A first-level university degree in communications, journalism, international relations, or a related field is mandatory for this position. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for effective communication and engagement with diverse audiences, particularly in the context of international organizations like the United Nations.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience in communication, which should include writing for web and social media, as well as mass media. Candidates should demonstrate a strong background in developing digital content and multimedia materials, showcasing their ability to engage audiences effectively through various platforms. Experience in graphic design and photography during high-level events is also essential, indicating a well-rounded skill set in communication and media production.

Languages:
Fluency in Spanish, both written and spoken, is required for this position, along with excellent skills in English. While English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat, proficiency in Spanish is crucial for effectively communicating with local audiences in Mexico. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory.
