Job Posting Organization: The Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) is a division within the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) that plays a crucial role in providing intellectual leadership on economic and financial aspects of transition in the region. Job Overview: The Associate Economist position is a full-time role that reports directly to the Director of Research within the Office of the Chief Economist. The primary purpose of this role is to contribute to the analysis of large datasets and assist in the preparation of core OCE products. The Associate Economist will manage large data sets independently and analyze them using advanced econometric techniques. This position also involves providing guidance and sharing knowledge with interns and analysts regarding the analysis of large datasets. The role is integral to the operational and strategic work of the Bank, as it supports the generation of key economic insights and contributes to the overall mission of the OCE.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Associate Economist will be responsible for organizing and managing large datasets on a day-to-day basis within the OCE. Key responsibilities include assisting with the design and implementation of impact studies that utilize large datasets, contributing to the generation of key OCE products such as chapters in the Transition Report or working papers, and analyzing large-scale datasets, including text-based data, through machine learning techniques. Additionally, the Associate Economist will perform ad hoc assignments that involve large datasets and/or machine learning techniques, ensuring that the analysis is thorough and meets the high standards expected by the OCE.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess at least a Master’s degree in economics or a related field. They should have experience in managing large datasets and demonstrate strong analytical and quantitative skills. A solid understanding of API interfaces, proficiency in programming languages such as Python, and familiarity with statistical software like R and/or Stata are essential. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required, along with good interpersonal skills and the ability to train junior staff. Familiarity with the EBRD region of operations and relevant work or study experience in the region is beneficial, and knowledge of one or more languages from the region is considered an advantage.
Educational Background: The educational requirement for this position is a Master’s degree in economics or a related field. This advanced degree is essential as it provides the foundational knowledge and analytical skills necessary for the complex tasks associated with the role of Associate Economist.
Experience: Candidates should have relevant experience in managing large datasets, which is critical for the responsibilities of this position. The role requires strong analytical and quantitative skills, indicating that candidates should have a background that includes practical experience in data analysis and econometrics.
