Job Overview:
The Director of Major Gifts is a pivotal role within the High Impact Philanthropy department at Mercy Corps, responsible for leading a team of philanthropy officers to secure significant funding for the organization’s global programs. This position requires a dynamic and strategic approach to fundraising, with a focus on building relationships with high-net-worth individuals and driving innovative strategies for major giving. The Director will manage a personal portfolio of donors capable of contributing $100,000 or more, while also guiding the team in enhancing donor engagement and identifying new opportunities for revenue generation. The role demands a deep understanding of Mercy Corps’ mission and the ability to articulate the need for unrestricted funding to support urgent and strategic initiatives. The Director will also coach frontline fundraisers on various fundraising approaches, including legacy giving and emerging giving vehicles, ensuring that the team is equipped to meet ambitious fundraising goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Director of Major Gifts will lead the major gift program, focusing on best-in-class relationship management to deepen donor engagement and drive revenue growth. Key responsibilities include managing a team of three Major Gift Officers, setting annual revenue and performance goals, and coaching frontline fundraisers. The Director will oversee a portfolio of 30-50 donors and prospects, generating new leads and developing personalized cultivation and stewardship plans. Collaboration with the Development Operations team is essential for tracking revenue and managing the major gift portfolio. The Director will also engage in organizational learning, dedicating time to activities that benefit both Mercy Corps and personal development, and will uphold safeguarding responsibilities by promoting a culture of respect and communication within the team.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Director of Major Gifts position should possess at least 6 years of experience in major gift fundraising, with a strong preference for those who have managed or coached frontline fundraisers. A proven ability to develop and implement targeted donor strategies in collaboration with colleagues and leadership is essential. Successful candidates will have demonstrated experience in relationship building, donor engagement, and upgrading gifts, along with knowledge of how to run a successful major gift program. Familiarity with Mercy Corps’ mission and international development is preferred, as is experience working for a global organization. Strong communication and presentation skills, along with excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail, are critical for success in this role.

Educational Background:
A bachelor’s degree is required for the Director of Major Gifts position, with a preference for candidates holding advanced degrees in relevant fields such as nonprofit management, business administration, or international relations. Educational qualifications should reflect a strong understanding of fundraising principles and practices, as well as knowledge of the philanthropic landscape.

Experience:
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 6 years of experience in major gift fundraising, with a strong emphasis on managing relationships with high-net-worth individuals. Experience in developing and executing successful fundraising strategies, as well as a track record of securing significant gifts, is crucial. Candidates should also have experience working in a collaborative environment, engaging with various stakeholders to achieve fundraising goals.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as effective communication with donors and stakeholders is essential. Additional language skills, particularly in languages relevant to Mercy Corps’ operational regions, would be considered a valuable asset but are not required.
