Job Overview: This internship is located in UNEP's Ecosystems Division, specifically within the Biodiversity and Land Branch and the Nature and Health Unit. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Nature and Health Unit (NAH). The primary functions of this position include assisting in documenting and digitizing institutional knowledge, supporting the development and maintenance of an internal knowledge repository, and conducting research on emerging knowledge management trends and tools. The intern will also be involved in organizing internal learning sessions, workshops, or webinars, and will assist in drafting, editing, and publishing content for various communication channels such as newsletters, blog posts, and social media. Additionally, the intern will help create and execute digital communication campaigns and manage social media platforms, focusing on content scheduling, community engagement, and performance analytics. The role also includes supporting the development of visually appealing communication materials and assisting in web development and digital management tasks.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks including: documenting and digitizing institutional knowledge such as best practices and project reports; supporting the development and maintenance of an internal knowledge repository; conducting research on emerging knowledge management trends and tools; organizing internal learning sessions, workshops, or webinars; drafting, editing, and publishing content for communication channels; creating and executing digital communication campaigns; managing social media platforms; developing communication materials such as presentations and infographics; assisting in website content updates and maintenance; performing basic web development tasks; designing graphics for digital and print media; managing digital assets and photos; and optimizing and editing images for various platforms.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Information Science, or a related field. Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or equivalent is required. Candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Additionally, candidates must have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing willingness to understand and tolerate differing opinions and views. Familiarity with digital communication platforms and social media management tools is essential, along with a basic understanding of content management systems (CMS). Proficiency in graphic design software, including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign, is also required, along with knowledge of print software such as QuarkXPress and understanding of Squarespace for managing website content.
Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree program in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Information Science, or a related field is required for this position. Candidates should have a solid foundation in communication principles and practices, as well as experience with digital communication and graphic design tools.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and relevant experience in communications, journalism, or public relations. While specific years of experience are not mandated, candidates should exhibit a strong understanding of the field and the ability to apply their knowledge in a practical setting. Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official United Nations language, such as French, is considered an advantage and is desirable for candidates applying for this internship.
