In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment: > Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) > International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) > Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI) > United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) The main roles of UN Women are: > To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms. > To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society. > To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.
Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
UN Women, established in July 2010, is dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. UN Women operates globally, supporting UN Member States in setting standards for gender equality and working with governments and civil society to implement laws and policies that benefit women and girls. The organization aims to make the vision of the Sustainable Development Goals a reality for women and girls, focusing on four strategic priorities: women's leadership and participation in governance, economic security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security and autonomy, freedom from violence, and contributions to peace and resilience. The Knowledge and Partnerships Centre in the Republic of Korea, established in 2022, serves as a hub for research, education, and partnerships to achieve gender equality in the Asia-Pacific region, aligning with UN Women’s global priorities and the 2030 Agenda.

Job Overview:
The consultant will provide professional interpretation services between Korean and English, ensuring accurate communication of key principles and analyses during UN Women meetings, events, and workshops. The role requires simultaneous and consecutive interpretation, maintaining accuracy in language and expression. The consultant will work under the supervision of the External Relations Specialist and is expected to engage in various activities, including online calls, webinars, and in-person meetings at the Centre. The consultancy is estimated to require 40 working days, split between full and half days, with a flexible engagement based on programmatic needs. The consultant will be compensated on a retainer basis, with payments processed monthly based on the number of days worked. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to UN Women’s mission while working in a dynamic and international environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide accurate and professional interpretation services from Korean to English and vice versa during UN Women meetings, events, and workshops.
  • Ensure that the interpretation reflects the true meaning and understanding of key principles and analyses presented.
  • Attend online calls, webinars, and in-person meetings as required, providing both simultaneous and consecutive interpretation.
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy in language, structure, and rhetorical expressions during interpretation.
  • Collaborate with the External Relations Specialist to determine specific assignments based on programmatic needs.
  • Negotiate and agree on the expected number of days necessary for each assignment in advance.
  • Complete each assignment upon approval from the supervisor.
  • Manage time effectively to meet tight deadlines and handle multiple deliverables.
  • Engage in mission travels outside Seoul as required, with transportation expenses and Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA) covered for such travels.

Required Qualifications:
  • Strong organization and communication skills.
  • Expertise in interpretation from English to Korean and Korean to English.
  • Familiarity with English terminology related to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work under pressure on multiple deliverables with tight deadlines.
  • Commitment to UN Women’s core values of integrity, professionalism, and respect for diversity.
  • Awareness and sensitivity regarding gender issues, accountability, and effective communication skills.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree (or equivalent) in Interpretation Studies, English Literature, Linguistics, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. An English-Korean Translation certificate is considered an asset.

Experience:
At least two years of proven professional experience in interpretation from English to Korean and Korean to English is required. Familiarity with program management, gender and development, care economy, technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV), and women’s empowerment terminologies is essential. Experience working within the UN system or for an international organization in the fields of development, humanitarian aid, and gender equality is an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in both Korean and English is required for this position. The ability to communicate effectively in both languages is crucial for the role, given the nature of the work involved in interpretation services.

Additional Notes:
This is a national consultancy based in Seoul, South Korea, with potential mission travels required outside the city. No Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA) will be paid for work conducted within Seoul, but transportation expenses and DSA will be provided for travel outside the city. The consultancy is structured as a retainer contract, allowing for flexible engagement based on the consultant's availability and the organization's needs. Payments will be made monthly based on the actual number of days worked, and the consultant will have access to office space as needed.
