Job Overview:
The Migration Health Nurse will be responsible for providing comprehensive nursing services within the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Bujumbura, Burundi. This role involves performing daily nursing activities that meet the technical requirements of resettlement countries, including conducting medical examinations, laboratory testing, vaccinations, and TB management. The nurse will also provide information and support to migrants and refugees regarding the health assessment process and treatments. The position requires collaboration with various partners, including health providers and UN agencies, to ensure effective follow-up and information sharing. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Chief Migration Health Officer and will be expected to maintain high standards of care and adhere to health assessment protocols.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform daily nursing activities in the Migration Health Assessment Clinic (MHAC) to fulfill the technical requirements of resettlement countries, including medical examinations, laboratory testing, vaccinations, and TB management.
  • Provide information and detailed explanations to migrants and/or refugees regarding the migration health assessment process and treatments.
  • Ensure proper identification and follow-up through comprehensive history taking and accurate biodata collection.
  • Follow and implement the Health Assessment Programme’s checklists and SOPs while maintaining standard universal precautions.
  • Verify that samples are properly transported to the laboratory.
  • Maintain and monitor the MHAC pharmacy and medical kits.
  • Provide pre and/or post-counseling on TB or HIV education.
  • Prepare administrative reports and program updates.
  • Support the planning and execution of mobile missions. 1
  • Assist with pre-departure documents and briefings. 1
  • Perform medical escort duties when required. 1
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with various partners. 1
  • Collect statistical information and share it with the Senior Migration Health Nurse or CMHO. 1
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Nursing from an accredited institution, along with a valid nursing license in the country of duty station. Additionally, candidates should have a minimum of three years of relevant clinical experience for Bachelor's degree holders or five years for Diploma holders. Excellent technical skills, particularly in phlebotomy, are essential, along with knowledge of tuberculosis management, communicable diseases, and public health. Candidates should also demonstrate strong organizational and communication skills, as well as computer literacy in MS Office applications.

Educational Background:
The educational requirement for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Nursing from an accredited academic institution. The institution must be recognized in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. A valid nursing license to practice in Burundi is also required, ensuring that the candidate can fulfill the responsibilities outlined in the position description.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of three years of relevant clinical experience if holding a Bachelor's degree, or five years if holding a Diploma. Experience in areas such as tuberculosis management, mass immunizations, and public health is advantageous. Candidates should also possess excellent bedside manner and knowledge of patient safety and infection prevention protocols. Proven clinical expertise or a post-graduate diploma in emergency care is considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in both written and spoken English and French is required for this position. Additionally, fluency in Kirundi and Swahili (oral and written) is desirable. Language proficiency will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Additional Notes:
The contract type for this position is Special Short Term Graded, with an initial duration of six months, extendable up to nine months based on funding confirmation. This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning only candidates holding a valid residence and work permit for Burundi will be considered. The appointment will also be contingent upon medical fitness certification and verification of residency and visa requirements. IOM has a zero-tolerance policy regarding misconduct and does not charge any fees during the recruitment process.
