Job Overview:
The Senior Migration Health Nurse will play a crucial role in the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Bujumbura, Burundi. This position involves overseeing nursing activities, ensuring compliance with health assessment protocols, and providing health education and counseling to migrants and refugees. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Chief of Mission or Chief Migration Health Officer and will be responsible for coordinating daily nursing activities, implementing health assessment programs, and maintaining quality assurance in nursing practices. The role requires a proactive approach to health education, documentation, and collaboration with various partners to ensure the health and safety of migrants throughout their journey.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist in coordinating daily nursing activities in the MHAC to meet the technical requirements of resettlement countries, including medical examinations, imaging, laboratory testing, vaccinations, TB management, treatment and referrals, pre-departure procedures, and documentation.
  • Provide health education and counseling to migrants regarding the health assessment process and treatments, including TB and HIV education.
  • Develop health education materials in collaboration with CMHO and CMHN.
  • Implement identification procedures for all migrants in relation to health assessments.
  • Ensure adherence to Health Assessment Programme checklists and SOPs, monitoring universal precautions.
  • Participate in quality improvement and assurance procedures for nursing activities.
  • Verify pharmacy stock and prepare medical kits as needed.
  • Create schedules and assign tasks to nursing staff, maintaining workflow and providing feedback for improvement.

  • Verify pre-departure documents and assist in preparations. 1
  • Perform medical escort duties as required. 1
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with partners, including internal IOM departments and other health providers. 1
  • Collect and share statistical information with CMHO. 1
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited institution, with a minimum of four years of professional work experience. A Master’s degree or higher is advantageous, and a valid nursing license in the country of duty station is required. Candidates should demonstrate excellent technical skills, particularly in phlebotomy, and have training or experience in TB management, mass immunizations, communicable diseases, and public health. Managerial experience is desirable, along with knowledge of patient safety and infection control principles. Proficiency in MS Office is required, and clinical expertise or a post-graduate diploma in emergency care is an advantage.

Educational Background:
The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited academic institution. Candidates with a Master’s degree or higher from an accredited institution will be viewed favorably. It is essential that the educational qualifications are from universities recognized in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. Additionally, candidates must hold a valid nursing license to practice in Burundi.

Experience:
A minimum of four years of relevant clinical experience is required, with at least two years in a supervisory role. Candidates should have excellent technical skills, particularly in phlebotomy, and experience in TB management, mass immunizations, communicable diseases, and laboratory testing is advantageous. Managerial experience is desirable, and candidates should possess knowledge of preventive care and disease control principles, as well as experience in patient safety and infection prevention and control.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory, while knowledge of French and Spanish is considered an asset. Language proficiency will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and oral assessments. Candidates should demonstrate effective communication skills in the required languages to ensure clear and open communication with migrants and other stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This position is a Special Short Term Graded contract with an initial duration of six months, subject to funding confirmation. The recruitment is local, and only candidates with a valid residence and work permit for Burundi will be considered. The appointment is contingent upon medical fitness certification and verification of residency and visa requirements.
