Job Overview: The position of Junior Specialist in Data Engineering is part of the DIGITS initiative, which drives digital transformation within GIZ. The primary goal of this role is to promote data-driven work through a high-quality data foundation and to advance the effective use of artificial intelligence (AI). The DIGITS team is responsible for building service offerings and infrastructure, testing new technologies, and continuously expanding the portfolio of services in this field. This role involves working collaboratively in a cross-functional team with data analysts, engineers, and architects to develop demand-oriented services and data applications. The position requires a proactive approach to enable data and fact-based decision-making, providing data access, and offering user-friendly analysis platforms for evaluations. The successful candidate will contribute to the agile development of solutions from initial ideas to production readiness, utilizing Microsoft Azure Data and AI Services and other tools from strategic partners like Microsoft and SAP.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Junior Specialist will support the analysis of requests, document findings, and develop initial ideas for technical solutions. Responsibilities include assisting in the integration of necessary internal and external data sources, defining the data lifecycle and risk classification according to ISO 27001 for data objects, and supporting the technical implementation of data flows in the MS Azure/MS Fabric environment using Azure Data Factory, PySpark, and T-SQL. The role also involves modeling and documenting physical and logical data structures and relationships within the MS Azure environment, developing Power BI reports and dashboards based on required data sources, and documenting business processes. Additionally, the candidate will assist in the development of AI applications using Azure AI Studio, integrating existing AI applications for further business use cases, and ensuring the continuous improvement and quality assurance of existing applications. Continuous knowledge building in new technologies and pilots regarding AI (GenAI/BusinessAI) and data foundation development is also expected.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a comparable qualification. Initial experience in software development, particularly in data applications and BI applications, is required. Solid knowledge in at least one programming language is essential, along with a fundamental understanding of data management and data modeling, including theoretical and practical knowledge in Data Lifecycle Management and the use of common modeling tools. Experience with reporting applications and report creation, such as Power BI, utilizing databases and historical data objects as the basis for reports is necessary. Proficiency in SQL and Python is mandatory, and initial experience with AI models and frameworks like Azure AI Studio is desirable. Creativity, pragmatism, and a willingness to learn are important attributes for this role. Proficient English and German language skills are required.
Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, or Engineering is required for this position. Equivalent qualifications or training may also be considered, provided they align with the job's technical demands.
Experience: The position requires initial experience in software development, particularly in the context of data applications and business intelligence (BI) applications. Candidates should have a foundational understanding of data management and data modeling, as well as practical experience with reporting applications and tools.
Languages: Proficiency in both English and German is mandatory for this role. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively in both languages, as they will be working in a bilingual environment. Additional language skills may be advantageous but are not required.
