Job Posting Organization: The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty (GAAHP) was initiated under the G20 Presidency of Brazil with the mission to eradicate poverty, hunger, and malnutrition worldwide. The organization aims to provide sustained political impetus and support through a combination of policy instruments, financial support, and knowledge sharing. The GAAHP operates through a Support Mechanism hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), leveraging the expertise of the UN Development System. The organization has a presence in multiple countries, including Brazil, Ethiopia, and Thailand, with a focus on creating synergies and providing technical assistance to its members.
Job Overview: The Director of the Support Mechanism of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty will lead the initiative in delivering the priorities established by the Global Alliance. This role involves overseeing the implementation of the Global Alliance's Terms of Reference, managing strategic planning and budgeting, and coordinating contributions from various UN agencies. The Director will also be responsible for ensuring coherence among the multi-agency team and the Support Mechanism staff, as well as leading the design and implementation of strategies across multiple offices. The position requires active engagement with stakeholders at the country level and the ability to track and promote the Alliance's achievements in international forums.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Director will undertake executive functions for the Support Mechanism, manage overall operations, and represent the Alliance in relevant forums. Responsibilities include convening and coordinating UN agency contributions, leading the design of joint strategies, maintaining the policy basket, and ensuring streamlined access to knowledge for member countries. The Director will support the organization of Global Summits, track results from partnerships, prepare Steering Committee meetings, and communicate with Alliance members. Additionally, the Director will supervise the Global South and Washington offices, lead resource mobilization efforts, and ensure staff development and capacity building.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in economics, sociology, political science, or other social sciences. A minimum of twelve years of relevant experience in international governance processes and cooperation related to economic, environmental, or social development is required. Demonstrated skills in managing for results, supervising diverse teams, and excellent communication and analytical skills are essential. Candidates should have the ability to work effectively in an international setting and lead collaborative efforts among diverse stakeholders.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree in a relevant field such as economics, sociology, political science, or development is required for this position. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of international governance and development issues.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of twelve years of relevant experience in international governance processes and international cooperation. Candidates should have a proven track record in managing multilateral and multi-stakeholder processes, as well as experience in a developing country context. Skills in networking and supervising teams are also essential for success in this role.
Languages: A working knowledge (proficiency – level C) of English is mandatory, along with intermediate knowledge (level B) of another FAO official language, which may include Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish. Additionally, proficiency in Portuguese is considered a strong asset and is desirable for this position.
