Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda and promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system. Established in 1972, UNEP serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment and has a mission to encourage decision-makers in government, local authorities, and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies, and practices that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production. UNEP operates in over 100 countries and employs thousands of professionals dedicated to environmental protection and sustainable development.

Job Overview:
The position involves providing strategic communications support to the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), which is a strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 500 banks, insurers, and investors. The consultants will assist in developing individual and independent climate-related business strategies for banks and implementing global finance sector principles to integrate sustainability into financial market practices. The role requires a deep understanding of strategic communications, media relations, and digital communications, particularly in the context of sustainable finance and climate change. The consultants will work closely with senior leaders and various stakeholders to enhance communications and engagement strategies, ensuring that UNEP FI's objectives are met effectively and efficiently.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultants will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, including:
  • Providing strategic advice in the development of strategic communications plans and reviewing existing drafts to enhance objectives, messaging, and media relations.
  • Developing communication plans, member engagement plans, and public outreach strategies to facilitate effective communication with stakeholders.
  • Drafting and reviewing various communications content such as talking points, media statements, press releases, and social media messaging.
  • Conducting media monitoring and sentiment analysis to gauge community and stakeholder sentiment, and executing media engagement strategies.
  • Developing a leak strategy and scenario planning document to ensure preparedness for any potential leaks.
  • Providing ongoing media support, including developing press releases and pitching media for proactive engagement.
  • Maintaining a communications calendar and gathering feedback to improve communications effectiveness.
  • Reporting directly to UNEP FI’s Climate Lead and Co-lead Communications, while coordinating closely with UNEP FI’s Banking Communications Lead.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in communications, modern languages, international relations, political science, public relations, or a related field. Additionally, they should have at least ten years of professional experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or marketing. Extensive experience in strategic communications, media relations, and digital communications is essential, particularly in the context of sustainable finance and climate change. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with senior leaders on communications strategy are also required.

Educational Background:
A bachelor’s degree in communications, modern languages, international relations, political science, public relations, or a related field is mandatory for this position. This educational background provides the necessary foundation for understanding the complexities of communication in a global context, particularly within the framework of the United Nations and its initiatives.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of ten years of working experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or marketing. This level of experience is crucial as it ensures that the consultants have a comprehensive understanding of strategic communications and best practices, enabling them to effectively contribute to UNEP FI's objectives and enhance its communications strategies.

Languages:
English is the primary working language of UNEP FI, and proficiency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is considered an asset, as it can facilitate communication with a broader range of stakeholders and enhance the effectiveness of the consultants' work.

Additional Notes:
The position is expected to last for approximately 4.5 months and is fully remote, allowing for flexibility in work arrangements. The consultants will not be charged any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, as the United Nations does not charge applicants for applications, interviews, or training. This ensures that the recruitment process is accessible and equitable for all candidates.
