Job Overview: The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is located within UNEP's Early Warning and Assessment Division, specifically in the GRIDs Unit or the Early Warning for Environment Analysis and EWE Briefs Unit. The primary function of this internship is to support the analysis of the state of the global environment, providing early warning information, and assessing global and regional environmental trends. Interns will engage in various tasks that contribute to the overall mission of UNEP, including data identification, management, and visualization, as well as supporting map production processes. Interns will work under the supervision of experienced staff members, gaining valuable insights into the workings of a major international organization and the environmental challenges faced globally.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks that may include:
Identifying and compiling data from reliable sources on specific environmental themes using geospatial technologies.
Managing, analyzing, and visualizing environmental threats and emerging issues to support informed decision-making on environmental matters.
Supporting the map production process and ensuring compliance with UN mapping rules and guidelines.
Assisting in verifying that mandatory disclaimers are accurately applied in all required languages.
Ensuring adherence to UN naming conventions and confirming the accuracy of geographical representations.
Integrating appropriate datasets and statistical codes into map production.
Selecting balanced map projections and integrating web-mapping services across various platforms.
Conducting quality control and documentation efforts to ensure compliance with UN standards prior to publication.
Undertaking additional tasks as required by the office, aligned with the intern's background and skills.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: a) Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). c) Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation. Additionally, candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Candidates should also possess the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Educational Background: The ideal educational background for this internship includes a degree in one or more of the sciences or a field relevant to the environment. This may encompass areas such as environmental studies, environmental economics, environmental assessments, environmental monitoring, climate change, international studies, mathematics, statistics, computer science, or information technology. The educational qualifications should align with the responsibilities of the internship, ensuring that the intern can effectively contribute to UNEP's mission.
Experience: No prior working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. However, candidates should possess relevant training, education, advanced coursework, or skills that would benefit the United Nations during their internship.
