Job Overview:
The position of Intern in the Early Warning and Data Analytics unit of UNEP's Early Warning and Assessments Division (EWAD) is designed for individuals who are passionate about environmental issues and eager to contribute to global efforts in monitoring and assessing environmental trends. The intern will work under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer and will be involved in various tasks that support the implementation of Early Warning for Environment initiatives. This role is crucial for providing technical support and ensuring that the work aligns with UNEP's Medium-Term Strategy (MTS). The intern will engage in project management, planning, and organizing activities that contribute to the overall goals of UNEP, particularly in relation to early warning systems that inform policy decisions and investments aimed at mitigating environmental risks.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
  • Providing substantive support in implementing Early Warning for Environment initiatives, ensuring alignment with UNEP's workplan and procedures.
  • Collaborating with technical teams to maintain consistency across UNEP and external partners.
  • Drafting various written outputs such as background papers, analytical notes, and sections of reports.
  • Organizing and facilitating meetings related to Early Warning for Environment, including logistical support and document preparation.
  • Supporting internal and external stakeholder meetings and drafting project proposals for resource mobilization.
  • Preparing outreach and communication materials in coordination with Early Warning networks.
  • Participating in outreach activities, workshops, and seminars, and presenting on assigned topics.
  • Collecting and analyzing data related to Early Warning for Environment, identifying trends, and providing insights through data visualization methods.
  • Assisting in drafting fundraising materials for public and private sector funding sources. 1
  • Supporting communication initiatives for Early Warning for Environment and performing other duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria at the time of application:
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Have graduated with a university degree in environmental sciences, environment monitoring, socio-economic data analysis, business or public administration, social science, law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">environmental law, or a related field. It is important to note that applicants to the UN internship-programme" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, but a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes being a student in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor’s or equivalent), or being enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. program, or having completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program. The field of study should be closely related to environmental issues, data analysis, or public administration, among others relevant to the internship.

Experience:
While professional work experience is not a requirement for this internship, applicants should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. This could include internships, volunteer work, or academic projects related to environmental monitoring, data analysis, or project management.

Languages:
Fluency in written and oral English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Additionally, a working knowledge of other UN official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is desirable, which could enhance communication and collaboration within the international environment of UNEP.
