The UN-Habitat Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS) was founded in 2011 in Cairo, Egypt, and it operates across 18 countries in the Arab region, focusing on technical cooperation and capacity building. The office implements policies, programs, and operational projects aimed at achieving sustainable urban development at various levels, including regional, national, and local. In Egypt, UN-Habitat has been active since 2005, providing technical support on urban issues through an integrated approach that encompasses urban planning, governance, and basic services.

Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is located within the Egypt country programme of UN-Habitat, specifically in Cairo. The intern will work under the guidance of the Country Programme Manager and will be involved in various activities aimed at supporting the design and formulation of the Country Strategy and its technical cooperation activities. This includes project identification and development, resource mapping, and reporting. The intern will also participate in technical working groups, seminars, and meetings, contributing to the collection and consolidation of information for reporting purposes. The role requires active engagement in communication efforts to promote UN-Habitat Egypt initiatives and activities, as well as support for the administration of social media platforms.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a range of tasks including:
  • Supporting the Country Office in designing and formulating the Country Strategy and its technical cooperation activities.
  • Assisting in project identification and development based on demand.
  • Mapping resources and partnerships relevant to UN-Habitat's work.
  • Collecting and consolidating data for UNSDCF reports and periodic reports for UN-Habitat Egypt.
  • Participating in UN technical working groups, seminars, meetings, and conferences, and preparing briefs for the office.
  • Compiling best practices and lessons learned from UN-Habitat's interventions.
  • Assisting in organizing and reporting on virtual and physical meetings, workshops, and seminars.
  • Supporting communication efforts related to UN-Habitat Egypt's initiatives.
  • Providing assistance in activating and administering the Country Office's social media platforms. 1
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria at the time of application:
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).
  • Have graduated with a Bachelor's degree, Master's, PhD, or equivalent. Additionally, applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications, particularly Microsoft Office Suite. A keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals are essential. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Educational Background:
The preferred areas of study for applicants include fields related to mass communication, journalism, economics, literature, political science, business administration, urban planning, and other relevant social sciences. Applicants must be either students in their final year of a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. programme, or have completed such programmes.

Experience:
While professional work experience is not required for this internship, candidates with experience in organizing, curating, or participating in events related to urban issues will be preferred. Relevant coursework, projects, or internships that align with the responsibilities of this internship, particularly in urban planning, policy development, or communication, are also desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in both oral and written English and Arabic is required for this internship position, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another UN language is considered desirable and may enhance the candidate's application.
