Job Overview: The Environmental Pollution Prevention Consultant will play a crucial role in the implementation of the Southeast European Sub-Regional Platform to Beat Pollution (SEEPP) project, which aims to strengthen the capacity in the management of contaminated sites in the Western Balkans. The consultant will be responsible for providing technical input in the development of legislation addressing pollution prevention and control, collaborating with various stakeholders, and promoting alignment with international frameworks such as the EU Green Deal and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The consultant will also design tailored training programs to enhance institutional and technical capacities for managing contaminated sites and preventing pollution, develop public awareness campaigns, and prepare progress reports and policy briefs to communicate project outcomes. This position requires a proactive approach to engage with regional, national, and local stakeholders, ensuring effective implementation of project activities and fostering collaboration among experts.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will undertake a variety of duties and responsibilities, including:
Providing technical input in the development of legislation related to pollution prevention and control.
Collaborating with government authorities, NGOs, and private sector actors to facilitate data exchange and knowledge sharing.
Actively participating in project steering committees and technical working groups.
Designing training programs to strengthen institutional capacities for managing contaminated sites.
Developing public awareness campaigns to inform communities about pollution impacts.
Preparing progress reports and technical documents to communicate project outcomes.
Documenting success stories and challenges to inform future initiatives.
Identifying pilot sites for practical demonstration activities and designing preliminary characterization plans.
Establishing thematic groups on pollution to enhance collaboration and coordination among stakeholders. 1
Monitoring trends in the country and similar projects at national and international levels.
Required Qualifications: The position requires several qualifications, including:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, or related fields.
A minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience, particularly in integrated environmental permitting.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate communications with international partners and manage operational activities.
Previous working experience in Southeast Europe is considered an advantage.
Proficiency in MS Office and various media applications.
Excellent work ethic, interpersonal skills, and time-management abilities.
A positive attitude towards project goals and flexibility in responding to additional requirements.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, or other related fields. This educational background is essential to ensure that the consultant has the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively address the complex issues related to environmental pollution and management of contaminated sites.
Experience: The consultant is expected to have a minimum of 7 years of work experience relevant to the assignment. This includes at least 7 years of experience in integrated environmental permitting, which is crucial for understanding the regulatory frameworks and practices necessary for effective pollution prevention and control. Experience in coordinating with international partners and managing operational activities is also required, along with a demonstrated ability to engage with various stakeholders in the environmental sector.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is required for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in French is also beneficial, as it is another working language of the UN. The ability to communicate effectively in these languages is essential for collaboration with international partners and stakeholders.
