Job Overview: The consultant will be engaged in the project titled 'Strengthening Climate Information and Early Warning Systems for science-based climate solutions.' This project aims to enhance UNEP's role in providing high-quality, credible, and open climate and environmental data, information, and early warning systems. The consultant will be responsible for delivering strategic partnerships, technical support, capacity building, and program development while contributing to project oversight. The role is critical as it supports countries in accessing timely and actionable climate information, which is essential for adaptation planning and resilience against climate-related hazards. The consultant will work closely with the Climate Services and Capacity Building Unit within UNEP's Early Warnings and Assessment Division, ensuring that the project aligns with international frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant's duties will include analyzing documents and reports to establish baselines for Climate Information and Early Warning Systems (CIEWS) in targeted countries. They will identify and enhance strategic partnerships and provide technical support and capacity building related to CIEWS. The consultant will contribute to developing funding requests for the project, serve as the primary contact for the SOFF-United Nations Multi-Partner Trust Fund Office, and ensure alignment with project requests. They will draft various documents, including reports and presentations, based on identified country needs, and review documents such as National Frameworks for Climate Services and Climate Data Strategies. Additionally, the consultant will maintain a robust database for results-based management, document lessons learned, and develop communication products for dissemination to stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a first-level degree related to Environment, Climate Change, International Studies, or a relevant field. An advanced degree (Master’s or equivalent) in sustainable development or a related area is advantageous. At least two years of professional work experience at the national or international level in project design and climate services is required. Experience in designing and implementing country projects is desirable, showcasing the candidate's ability to manage and execute projects effectively.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a first-level degree in a relevant field such as Environment, Climate Change, or International Studies. An advanced degree, such as a Master's, in sustainable development or a related discipline is preferred, indicating a higher level of expertise and understanding of the complexities involved in climate-related projects.
Experience: The position requires at least two years of professional experience in project design and climate services at either the national or international level. This experience should demonstrate the candidate's capability to manage projects effectively, particularly in the context of climate information and early warning systems. Experience in designing and implementing projects in various countries is considered an asset, as it reflects the candidate's adaptability and understanding of diverse environmental contexts.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory for this consultancy role, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is another working language of the UN. Proficiency in additional UN languages would be considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate and collaborate in a multilingual environment.
